Would you join Starfleet?

If I were living in a Starfleet era, were 18 years old, had my eyesight fixed, etc., hell yes. I almost signed up for Air Force ROTC back in the day but for the poor eyesight. In retrospect, a little discipline and focus would have done me a lot of good.

But, yeah, points taken re exploding panels, boredom, long-distance relationships, etc.

I would definitely join up in a heartbeat! I'd probably be in the sciences department, though I'd go for security if I could. Yes, there are some negatives to living on a starship, but it's gotta be better than what I'm living with now.

I would like to think that I would want to join simply because I love Star Trek....but looking at what life would actually be like there and taking in all the physical and emotional risks you'd be exposed to I know it's not for me.

Plus I'm rubbish at science and maths and stamina and er I'm lazy and hate being disturbed during my free time.......the very idea of sitting down to relax then to be told to report to the bridge or whatever would make me wanna scream NOOOOOO LEAVE ME BE!!!!

I wouldn't last three seconds in Starfleet.

Why? It doesn't look hard. It's not like they expect all that discipline and following rules like in a real military. Seems to me like you get to wear snazzy uniforms and shoot people, without all the boring stuff like following orders and not being insubordinate and insulting officers, and not sleeping around with people above or below you in rank. It's just one big space party! :rommie:

What if they put you on a Miranda-class starship during the war? :(

I'd only go the officer route, start as an ensign, may be ops, tactical, or pilot on the bridge and go from there. I'd hate to do what O'Brien does on Enterprise, or those other low ranks.

What true ST fan would not join Starfleet? If it were real I would have been there. Not sure where I would have been put though, maybe communications. I'm definitely not the officer material but would be happy to take orders.

In light of Beaker's comment, I find it a little funny that the two ads this page is currently displaying are for the Air Force: "It's not science fiction. Explore our world."

When I was a kid I wanted to join the Air Force and eventually become an Apollo astronaut, but then my mom told me girls can't be astronauts.

Does wanting to join a military organization count????

You bet I'd join Starfleet.

Yes I would, free meals and accommodation, get to travel lots, see the Universe, every day an adventure. As long as I didn't end up on some remote posting along the neutral zone or something.

Of course ;) That's the only thing I knew I wanted to do since I was a little girl. But I would never want to be the captain, more like part of the medical or engineering crew.

Around the time the STXI ads were out, I was considering enlisting (not Starfleet). When they discovered my qualifications they asked about me becoming an officer. I asked if I could do a Jim Kirk and have my own ship in eight years.

They didn't like that.

Assuming Trek style medical stuff could fix what eventually got me booted out of pre-training, I'd merrily sign up. As long as I got to keep my beard. I like my beard.

So for those who would: how many of you joined the navy?

Funny thing is when I joined the army back in '92, I had two or three weeks before I started basic, so when I went for runs I'd imagine (gawd this sounds silly now!) that I was preparing to enter Starfleet.
I kept thinking about Picard passing two upperclassmen on the last hill of the 40km run on Dalula II as well:techman:

Yes, I would, preferably in the 24th Century. Not much preference in what I did, as long as it was starship service. The idea of starbase service doesn't exactly appeal :p Have a feeling I'd end up in Operations (either Security or Engineering), though I wouldn't mind Command or Science.

I have seriously considered (maybe considering might be the better term), but at the moment, my level of fitness isn't up to scratch.

I'm bad at math and science so I doubt I'd pass the Academy entrance exam. My first degree is in sociology and anthropology, so I'd be looking at the diplomatic corps as an enlistee. I'd probably be based at headquarters or a large ship since I have a husband and children and wouldn't want to be separated from them for months at a time. Truth be told, though, I'm not much good at blindly following orders, I question everything, and I'm bloody gobby, so I'd probably have an impressive collection of warnings on my record.

Engineering for me. I love playing with the newest tech toys (knowing my luck I'd be stuck with how to milk the most out of an old bucket of bolts)

Why bother? As we've been discussing in the most recent Federation economy thread, people have everything they need. You don't need to work to put food on the table anymore. Why join Starfleet and train for years and years and then grovel beneath fat bearded first officers for endless aeons when you could just get yourself a ship and go where you want? :)
