Would you die to allow someone close to you to live?

Heck No. I'm a strong supporter of "natural selection" (the slow, outright stupid, sick and those unwilling/unable to adapt are good & screwed.)

The world's full of people that (a century ago) would've been permitted to be aborted with one look at the biological parent(s); or, allowed to stick a metal fork in a utility socket, "just to see what'll happen."

Today, the slow and stupid rule supreme. They're allowed to form Parent-Teacher associations and ban everything except rice cakes from coming to school; and, drive bus routes in the catskills, believing they're entitled to throw same-sex couples off the bus just for quietly holding hands while sharing a single set of headphones/earbuds attached to the same i-pod.

I guess you wouldn't do CPR either, natural selection and all.

I would die for my kids and wife without hesitation. Everyone else would have to hold on while I thought about it...

I can't imagine letting someone else die to save me, I would have a hard time dealing with that for the rest of my life.

In a word.. Yes..

I'd die in place of anyone I cared about.. In fact, I'd die for anybody, if it meant they would live.. I draw the line at murderers, rapists and pedofiles, however...

That said, I don't believe in the death penalty or abortion, so make of that what you will...

Gotta love how you put death penalty and abortion in the same sentence...

I probably would not. It's a tragedy when anyone dies but I can think of no instance where I would consider my life less valuable than another. Call it selfish if you will, but on the other side of the equation, I would not expect nor ask anyone I know to sacrifice themselves for me.

I don't think you love it. Nor does any person with sense.

Exactly.

Hmm, I believe I would. For family, in a heartbeat. For strangers, I dunno. I have risked my life for strangers however. Twice actually.

First time there was a kid on the street i caught and pulled away just before he was hit by a van. The car got my right foot though, but i was wearing my steel toe boots so i wasn't injured. I got banged up a bit though, but the kid got away with a scraped knee.

And the second time i was racing and the guy in front of me crashed his car, and as it later turned out had a concussion, so he crawled out of the car purely by instinct. Fight or flight type of thing. Anyway, I knew that I or the car behind me hits him, he'd dead. So I slammed the brakes and placed my car between the injured driver and the car behind me. It was a split second decision. I figured my Volvo 245 was big enough for him to see and avoid me, but he didn't. I remember thinking, just before the car hit me at roughly 80 kph, "This was a stupid idea, please hold together."

This is a hard question....it is easy to answer it when not faced with the situation but might be different to say when actually IN the situation......which I hope I never have to choose between such a thing, ever.

I'd like to think I would have the courage to die for someone or something that I loved. I don't know if I actually do, though.

I've always felt the same, I'd lay down my own life to save anyone younger than me.

Are you older than 37? If so, we should hang out, at least until I'm done testifying.

Nope I'm 34 so I live to die another day :D

But even at 34 having done sod all with my life I feel very old* - technically I'm old enough to have a grandchild. It would probably have to be someone a generation younger than me now.

Not that I'd have time to stop and ask them :D

*I'm not depressed about that - I'm tending to view this as my gap life

But if my death led to saving someone's life, I guess that would make it worthwhile.

I suppose one could argue that just means I don't have anyone I consider sufficiently close to me to make the answer yes, but that's really getting into semantics.
Of course you could argue that. In the end, isn't everything a matter of semantics? That's the beauty of it. ;)

Jesus teaches that no greater love is there than to lay down one's life for a friend.
He's still somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps, tho.

That said, I don't believe in the death penalty or abortion, so make of that what you will...
I assure you they do exist.

I'd like to think I would have the courage to die for someone or something that I loved.
So... baseball?

I would not expect nor ask anyone I know to sacrifice themselves for me.

I make every one of my friends sign a contract saying they will lay down their life for me, also they must name me a beneficiary in their wills.
