Just imagine that you are a single person living on your own. Simply yes or no poll.

Oops on the poll question I put 'like' instead of 'live' - silly me.

Oh hell no. I'd die of claustrophobia within a week.

Besides, there's a couple other reasons why I wouldn't go anywhere near these things:

- No couch/living area. There's a tiny table with a couple of chairs, and what looks like a BarcaLounger near the front door, but apart from that, nothing. What are you going to do, sit on the bed all day?

- No room for a decent sized TV/entertainment system.

Also, did I hear that guy right, is there one unit that is both washer AND dryer? How is that possible?

I would hate to live in there. There's not enough natural light and it's too cramped. However, I once lived in an "apartment" that makes this look positively ostentatious by respect: it was 6.5' by 11', with a mini fridge and an airline sink. There was a loft for extra space, where my roommate the morbidly obese vegan Rent fanatic slept.

I'm jealous of the washing machine, though.

They showed a couch and a TV stand after he opened the door.

^ That didn't look like a couch. Too small.

And if that other thing (that the host passed at about 1:43) was a TV stand, there's no way it could hold a *decent* sized TV. You couldn't exactly fit an HDTV with a Blu-Ray drive on that thing.

Also, how are these things anchored to the ground? Get a good gust of wind (or worse, a tornado) and you'll be tumbling ass over teakettle.

It kinda looked like a futon. I saw it again...it looked like 2 people could sit on it.

It looked like a two seater sofa but I think there would be room for a small three seater.

I would live in one but I would have to get rid of a lot of my shit which would probably be a good thing. I think there would be enough room to place a couple of small bookshelves into the unit. I would probably have two recliner chairs instead of the small couch.

I believe you have to have foundation blocks that you bolt the units to.

Skylights would help make it look bigger inside, and bring in more light. They could even outfit it with solar panels and help on electricity.

I don't think I could live in one that small though, maybe put two of those together and then we're talking.

Not a good thing to live in around tornado prone areas, or areas with severe storms.

I'm worried about the thickness of the walls and how well insulated it really is.

Still wondering about the foundation/support issue. The host didn't say anything about what keeps these things solidly on the ground (I highly doubt it's just the weight of the thing). I realize that unless you live in the Bermuda Triangle, you wouldn't exactly be bombarded by *constant* winds, but still...I live in Nebraska which has had its share of tornadoes, and if I'd had one of these container homes back then, it and I would be orbiting the fucking Earth by now.

Also, I definitely would not fit on that bed. (If that was a bed.) I would appear to have a bit to spare in the height department regarding being too tall in the area of not being short enough.

Some places this might be good for are places with overcrowding, or places with milder climates. I could see these being used in India for example, or Japan, places with over population.

They'd also be perfect for people in Africa, poor villages and the like, if somehow the government could supply these to them, it would upgrade their quality of life.

If you look at this PDF file you can see different ways that these modules can be constructed including larger homes (pictures of such homes are shown towards the end).

I could live in one of those - I've had apartments which weren't a whole lot more spacious than that. I don't think it'd be my first choice, though. ;)

Not voluntarily, no. It's too small and dark inside.

But I've seen plenty of worse flats for rent/sale, so I sould understand if someone wanted to. Not for me though.

Oh hell no. I'd die of claustrophobia within a week.

The funny thing is, in terms of floor size, it's probably on a par with small urban studio apartments.

Really? Really? You've never heard of combo washer-dryers? We've even had several threads on them in Misc... two of which you contributed to! :D

I will say this - after seeing those shipping container homes, I have a renewed appreciation for my own house! These containers remind me of Korben Dallas' apartment in The Fifth Element.

I could never be able to afford to buy my own regular house but I might be able to afford one of these on a cheap block of land.
