That actually looks pretty rad.

Rad or Bad?

I think if she was wearing black thigh-high boots it would be a better look than the sneakers.

[edit] Or even knee-high or calf-high would be better.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

(read Seven in a catsuit - a walking Borg brain with all that information in her head and people were obssessed with her other assets!).

I think Janeway would've been killer in a mini - she remains a very attractive lady.
With Captain Kathryn Janeway the first female commanding officer in a leading role of a Star Trek series I think trousers were necessary to accept this position of power for TV audiences in the mid-1990s on network TV.

7of9 was brought into the show for a different reason, hence the catsuit (in lieu of a miniskirt).
This visual was continued in ENT with T'Pol...

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

I don't think Janeway's clothing would have influenced any of the "they" you are talking about.

There was (is?) a number of fans who were (are?) not ready to accept a female captain no matter what, and so they latch on to whatever they can to criticize her--her voice, her controversial decisions, etc. While for some, those qualities just made her interesting, for others, they made her despicable.

The clothing had nothing to do with "their acceptance" of her.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

Well, I doubt that I'm one of the "they" you are referencing, but I'm forced to admit I most probably wouldn't have accepted her as a Captain if she wore a miniskirt. Just like I would have ignored Kevin Costner's "Prince of Thieves" if he wore green tights and a pointy cap with a feather in it. Clothes do make the man... and the woman. Look how difficult it is for people to seriously accept Seven and T'pol in their cat suits.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

Seriously… Who would put a captain in a mini, have you ever worn one of those things it is difficult to take yourself seriously never mind expect others to.

I think it was a good call to get rid of the skirts it was very unrealistic

In Janeway’s first couple years she could have rocked it, but it didn’t fit her character.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

If it was still the official uniform then she wouldn't have had any choice but to rock it.

Some of the blokes where in the fleet in 2364 (tng season one?) and would have had the option of miniskirts even if the fleet-gals never did because of reverse sexism.

I'm thinking NOW that it might have just been a regional thing becuse the first year of picards mission might have been close to colony settled by the peoples from the planet of Transexual from the galaxy of Transilvannia?

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

You think I might be a sweet transvestite?

Far too lazy.

I don't own any under wear of either gender.

Besides I find that when I have worn women's underwear in the past that it quickly and uncomfortably disappears, after which I have to dial up the fire department to arrange a recovery mission.

Hmm?

I was thinking mostly of Chakotay and Carey, since Chuckles was old enough and Carey or someone who looks just like Carey WAS in TNG Season one, but then again he was also an ambassador on Babylon 5 so go figure...

What if the miniskirt wasn't stylistic, but an environmental consideration? that there was some "weather" issue like super humidity, flooding or marshlands where the people in charge of designing uniforms decided that men (and women too!) should be barelegged? Oh my, if such a "weather" issue existed then the primary uniform would have to be adaptable to that "weather" issue that the the trousers in the standard uniform would have to have some some sort of velcro tearaway function like strippers have on stage to present their junk to their punters, that ever so quickly with zero effort all the crew of Voyager could be in anything from hot pants to short shorts if the full and complete uniform became undesirable... Janeway in Macrososm? If kathy was wearing tearaway trousers that would transform into hot pants, then she would have torn them away because it was really steamy beyond any comprehension of comfort that day.

I wonder if in the pilot Tuvok had been wearing a Mniskirt when he met Neelix that he would have been more or less eager to "have one of those uniforms from the replicator"?

Picards dress uniform in seasons one was an ultra miniskirt and stockings.

Compare tot he dress uniform from the movie Insurrection?

You know, maybe not a miniskirt, but I think I may have preferred the TNG-style uniforms on Voyager. They looked classier than the DS9-style jumpsuits (not to mention that females wore rather form-fitting ones, whereas men wore looser, two piece versions). As a matter of fact, why didn't they go with those for Voyager? It was pretty well established on DS9 that starship crews and headquarters personnel usually wore the TNG-style uniforms while the DS9 crew wore the less formal jumpsuits... Am I making any sense here?

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

I don't know if it is a question of formality considering the changeover into the grey uniforms seemed super formal compared to the jumpsuits and all that had changed on DS9 was the imminent threat of war and doom.

Sisko changed over to old style tng when he visited earth in season 4 and the Odyssey's crew was in old tng uniforms in season 3 but lets not forget that in the real world that the wardrobe department didn't have enough uniforms to go around while making generations and that all the extras were dossed up in every TNG uniform they had in stock and the most humorous mark of all was that half way through the movie Geordie CHANGED UNIFORM, well more so he changed the era of uniform he was wearing after he got back from being tortured by Caligula.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

mid 90s poitical correctness gone insane, I was thinking that they were too afraid to seem old school exploitative that they veered too far to the side of caution Udat that they were ignoring the utility and comfort of a miniskirt (it's so much easier to kungfu kick someone in the face with out all the obstruction of an inside seem or gusset.), when in all honesty did you look at Troi's wardrobe over the years? Nothing lascivious but definitely feminine and half the time she was in a skirt.

(However I can imagine that at some point a starship crashlanded on an ice planet in the TOS era, and all the women froze to death, but all the men in the crew survived to be rescued because they had trousers.)

I remember when Starbuck from NuBSG put on a dress for what looked like a "ho-down" but the first thing out of her mouth was some thing like "If you say anything I'll beat the frakk out of you."

What about the "tunic" dress uniform for the boys in season one TNG?

It was a miniskirt and tights.

Meanwhile why am I to think that catsuits are sexy?

Wesley wore catsuits everyweek and it did nothing for me.

Of course if you accept this argument then the guys have to be allowed to wear the unisex scant as well. I actually saw a beefy naval officer (in real life) in one at a convention once and I'll be honest, he looked ok. But if we're to have a genuinely equal Trek you can't have girls in mini skirts 'because they're functional' without the guys.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

of course, that's been my mission statement all along.

I find boys in little dresses funny and I find girls in little dresses delightfully revealing, so in either case I am chuffed.

BUT!!!!

What about stockings and/or pantyhose?

Because we are talking about literally UNIFORMITY here, so in for a penny in for a pound.

And leg shaving?

Do women shave their legs in the 24th century or is such a habit backward bordering on barbaric?

(i have a theory that the (fallout)genetic modifications made by humans on one another and themselves and their children during the Eugenics War stopped unwanted hair in unreasonable places which explains why 20th century conventions of feminine beauty are still met with out any of the unthinkable 20th century regiment and routine to go along with achieving such an appearance.)

If the men can walk about fearful of velcro, then so should the women!

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

I have to admit that I have never considered that some people might have a fear of velcro. My only comment is, "Ewwwwwww!"

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

Well in the orginal series they all wore mini skirts. I personally dont think the clothes make the person, but then Im not a hip and trendy person.

I think paramount needs to move away from the sex thing. I know they wanted to snare the 20-30 year old males, but I bet women are catching up watching the shows.

If the women had to wear minis then the men should be in shorts.

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

If the men are not wearing shirts then I DEMAND that the women don't either.

Um?

I assume that the combadge would be used to cover up a nipple? So do they leave a nipple exposed or would it be pips on nips over on the right hand side?

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

^ You guys already have it pretty good. The producers of Battlestar Galactica's "The Plan" are my heroes because in a bathroom scene of nude women they were able to sneak ONE nude guy into the background. They said in the commentary they were afraid more than one wouldn't make it by the network. What the heck...

Re: Would the've accepted Kathy as a woman if her uniform was a minisk

My problem with the sexed-up uniforms--in addition to the fact that it's a shallow ratings ploy--is that they are not PRACTICAL. High heels in an emergency, or all that exposed skin, are not a good idea when there is a risk of burns, chemical spills, or pathogen exposures. This is why, although the ENT uniforms aren't the greatest sartorial accomplishment ever, I actually choose them as my favorite--they are practical and I can actually BELIEVE that people in a military would wear that.
