Is there more than one Moopsy in existence? Maybe it was a genetically engineered abomination, like Edward's Tribble but without the asexaul reproduction.
I would assume if Lower Decks kept going we would have run into a planet of the Moospsies. But that could just be my personal head canon.
I question the canonicity of any Short Trek, and especially one that involves tribbles, but wasn't written by David Gerrold.
I don't think there's "only one moopsy," any more than I think there's only one space tardigrade (and no, I don't have a problem with "Ephraim and Dot" being considered canonical). But we must all acknowledge that there is only one fruitcake in the universe, and it just keeps getting passed around at Christmas (and Heaven forbid you attempt to eat it).
I eat them all the time. Really love those candied cherries.
Even if Edward's Tribble was a fiction, genetic aberrations are quite real. The Federation's "no genetically enhancing your kids" rule did not exist in a vacuum.
