Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

Maybe it's classism? That's not the same thing.
I have experienced this type of racism personally so unfortunately I felt what it was right away. I wish it were classism, I really do.
Or I could be completely wrong. But it’s how I felt and interpreted the scene.

Yes. One of the biggest misconceptions with Star Trek is the idea that different classes were eliminated just because poverty was eliminated. I had this misconception too. But someone can be out of poverty and still not "rich".

Picard in First Contact said the "economics of the future are somewhat different", not that the economy didn't exist at all. They might not have had money, but they did have credits.

And, moreover, the Vineyard is something Picard inherited. It wasn't his originally. I wouldn't be surprised if Picard's ancestors in a fictional 2020 had the Vineyard.

Hatred is not racism. You can dislike anyone you want for whatever reason you want even in the future. The one thing definitions of racism don't convey is the power dynamics. Black as a group can't show racism to whites, They can hate whites but since they lack the political and economic power to act on that hatred, it isn't racism. (and Yes there are exceptions but it is rare).

Can't you express your opinion without delving into racial epithets?
There's nothing we've seen so far in PICARD to indicate that Racism is in any way involved with the relationship between Jean-Luc and Raffi.
You're placing an emphasis on something that nobody else sees.
And it is a bit disturbing.
Maybe because I have experienced increased amounts of reverse racism in my personal life since 2008? And my family as well.

Absolute crap! I have been called hideous racist things by black people. Of course they can be racist.

So Black politicians have taken your vote, poisoned your water, wrecked your schools, destroyed your community and sent black police officers to jail or kill you and your family. U huh.
I can’t say what they have said to me as it is a racist slur and would break the TOS here. PM if you want full details of what racism I face

Ummmmm.....
This is exactly why these kind of conversations belong in The Neutral Zone Forum.

May I suggest moving this to there ... now, before another crackdown hits.

:techman:
I agree. I am livid as I was baited into continuing this but I also made the mistake thinking others would have similar life experiences of reverse racism. I will take this to TNZ. Join me there or PM me for continuing discussion

Agreed unless the episode is about racism.
I would like to think that that goes without saying, but the Internet is teaching me otherwise.

Regardless, this discussion on nicknames in Picard is completely off the rails and thus far there seems to be a limited reason as to why its a problem based upon what's present on screen.

I'm going inconvenience everyone by bringing this thread back on topic.

Someone said that seventh season Picard might've let "JL" slide. I don't think so. At least not if it was serious. If it were a one-time joke, he'd let it slide. But I don't think "JL" is something Riker would call him because he didn't call anyone by their initials.

How about: is Raffi justified in her anger at Picard for her Starfleet career being destroyed during the rescue armada incident? I mean, she seems pretty upset at one of the most revered and respected Starfleet officers of the past several generations and is now living in what amounts to the late 24th century equivalent of a trailer. Picard hasn't spoken to her in 14 years. She clearly is not comfortable with him being around her.

Why don't we focus on the justification for her anger as opposed to half-baked theoretical ideas of what unknown factors are allegedly helping to fuel said anger? We know she believes he hung her out to dry and let her be sacrificed when he resigned from Starfleet. Focus on that and if she should still be this angry 14 years later.

Racism? We might as well ask if she doesn't like bald men.
