Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

If Riker struted out the Turbolift shouted "Hows it hangin' JL?" while getting into his chair would he have gotten away with it?

I'm guessing no, so why does this new character?
Because she is a different person who met Picard at a different stage of his life and forged a very different relationship with him under entirely different circumstances, working together very closely on the kind of project that would facilitate a more informal relationship?

Because Picard is older now, and old age can mellow someone.

Let's not forget that this is six years after Nemesis, so Raffi could potentially have been Picard's First Officer for almost as long as Riker was on the Enterprise D. They obviously just have a different relationship.

And the difference is, Riker would never have said it because it was as much to do with his character as Picard's. Riker was character was more formal and deferential to authority. Raffi is clearly not.

And don't forget, Picard called Admiral Hanson "JP", so there is precedent.

I see no issue whatsoever with Raffi calling Picard "JL"

It's out of character for him to be OK with a junior officer calling him "JL", almost as much so as the Nemesis driving scene.

Maybe I'm blanking due to heavy drinking but where does Raffi shout "hows it hangin' JL?" in any of her appearances.

She didn't, I was just using it as an example to call him JL in a really casual manner.

You don't "lighten up" that much with age, it's a personality trait transplant.

You need to meet more people. Picard originally was a strict by the book captain at the start of TNG but being assimilated, tortured, facing near death a couple of times, having a family with another man's wife :), etc. Made him laid back to the point he was playing poker with is bridge crew and had him seriously think about running off a hot immortal alien woman he just met.

It's also possible Picard and Raffi were lovers which also might explain a extra level of closeness and also why she was so hurt with him not talking to her for years and maybe he didn't talk to her because he felt guilt for her getting fired.

I think Chabon said it was a platonic relationship. Picard might have seen her more as a daughter figure.

I wonder if she used to serve under Picard on the Enterprise-E and gradually moved up the ranks.

Is the new first officer in the deleted scenes of Nemesis not Canon? Maybe Picard got rid of him after he called him Jean Luc, and he was replaced by Raffi who he let call him JL :)

Beverly called him Jean-Luc all the time. He has been ok with being addressed informally during TNG so why is it a problem now?

Raffi calling him JL is a shortcut to show us that they had a close relationship and she wasn't just a random officer working under him, it's neither a big deal nor out of character for Picard.

As close as Data, Riker and Troi were with Picard, I think you can count the number of times on one hand they ever called him "Jean-Luc." JL is a terrible creative choice and totally does not work.

It does feel like an attempt to convince viewers that Picard and Raffi are close as opposed to actually showing it.
