Would I like Call of Duty: Black Ops if I....

enjoyed playing Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 4, Oni, Halo, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, Enter the Matrix, OO7: Goldeneye (Nintendo 64), Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and 007: From Russia With Love?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking into buying a PS3, and the best deal I've found thus far is the 160 gb system that comes bundled with Call of Duty: Black Ops and a CoD:BO expansion pack; however, I'm not entirely sure whether or not to get it because I'm not entirely sure that I would end up playing BO at all, and am not sure if it's worth having a game that I might not end up playing.

Thoughts/opinions/etc.?

Those games are not similar to CoD at all. That doesn't mean you WONT like CoD though.

If you have never played CoD before, I would say that Black Ops is just as good as any to start with. I'm not a big fan, but I'm just burnt out on the franchise. You wouldn't have this issue if you're new to it.

There is a MGS4 bundle on amazon...
with the 160GB drive...

That's kinda like asking whether you'll like Star Trek based on the fact that you enjoyed watching

  • the evening news
  • live sports broadcasts
  • Dallas
  • Denver Clan and, I don't know,
  • A.L.F.?
Granted, it is a first person shooter, and some of the games you listed are first person shooters, but it's still not a viable basis for a recommendation.

You could always pick up the first Call of Duty for the PC to see if you like the franchise. It's $13.99 on Steam right now and it's old enough that you should be able to run it with no problems.

You will learn the meaning of rage quit if you try BOps on the PS3. It's glitchy and has never worked clean, plus players quit at the first hint of (real) opposition.

Most likely yes, since you enjoy those great shooting games.

Thinking of picking this game up too, but for the Wii, an ok format for the game or should I pick it up for something else?

I would say go ahead and buy the bundle, and if you don't like the game just sell it and buy a game you do want. Or buy the system without a game at all. Or do the MGS4 bundle someone else linked. Options! :techman:

The best parts of Black Ops are the Zombie modes and Combat Training against bots with a few of your friends.

The multi-player suffers because you're often saddled with idiots that won't stop babbling BS in their mics and unlike other games, there's no "vote to kick" lousy/idiotic players.

As for the campaign, it's a fairly average Cold War spy story. It's moderately appealing visually, at least the "movie" scenes are. As for game play, I can't stress enough what a steaming pile of poorly programmed dogshit it is. If you enjoy randomly spawning, dying and having to replay segments of missions over and over and over again... go for it. Myself, I'm trying to force myself to finish the campaign. I'm at the very end of the game, and maybe it's bugged but... I have to destroy this Russkie whirly-bird. I'm on take 23 right now and while I get insta-killed by one hit, I can unload everything I have point blank and... nothing.

I've got a few friends that are pretty avid gamers, with trophies and achievements from here to eternity, that all gave up on the campaign.

I've completed the Black Ops campaign on both Normal and Veteran difficulties, and I thought it was a pretty fun campaign to play. It certainly was a step up from the grenade spam gauntlet that was World at War's Veteran difficulty, although I didn't even find that to be as bad as some people made out, and I managed to get all the Veteran achievements on that game too.

Well, I now have all the proof I need that, in my opinion, it is indeed the steaming pile of shit I said it was.

After my above post, I made about 5-6 more attempts taking out the Soviet Hind. Same old, same old. I hit it point blank with 1/2 a dozen rockets and nada. I get one-shot killed. And here's my proof... I was so pissed, I just took my hands of the controller, waiting to die. I'm not touching the controller, not firing anything and then... Objective complete. Target destroyed. The fucking Hind flew into my helicopter and destroyed itself. Yeah. That's fun.

It would seem that the best platform to get Black Ops for is the 360. I play it on the 360 all the time, and aside from a few dodgy connections in the multiplayer (which don't even seem to happen that often anymore), I've never had an issue with it. I'm hearing all sorts of horror stories about the buggy PS3 version, and the less said about half-arsed Wii version the better.

You might enjoy it. It's a very fast-paced shooter than borders more on the old arcade style than realism. If you can though, get it on PC; the console versions blow in comparison — as usual.

Well, I'm playing it on a PS3 and I'm now wondering if that's the reason Servo and I have such differing views on the campaign mode's playability/enjoyment.

I also think so.

I bought myself a PS3 on Friday (I ended up not getting the Black Ops bundle at all, instead opting to go with a standard PS3 160 gb system, and bought Uncharted and Ninja Gaiden Sigma at Gamestop to go along with it). I might eventually pick up Black Ops somewhere, but, for now, I'm more than satisfied with Uncharted and NGS (especially Uncharted).

Thanks to everyone for answering my queries.
