Would Generations had been better off had they used Q instead?

I really wasn't warm to any of the TNG movies, so in hindsight I would have been happy with the original early idea of pitting Kirk vs Picard - if it's going to be cheesy it may aswell be fun.

Maybe something that involved a sequel to a TOS episode in the 24th century. There were a bunch of things. Maybe something happens that requires Kirk, but Kirk disappeared in the 23rd century shortly after the events of ST6. Perhaps Kirk's disappearance actually occurs because he was needed in the 24th century.
Honestly, this idea is one that appeals to me. It's also one that Shatner explored in one of his books with Kirk (since he created his own universe where Kirk didn't die). It invites conflict already because Kirk would have a different way of fixing the problem and Picard would be annoyed because it didn't solve the problem in the first place.

And you could do a Nexus type thing that traps Kirk, thus allowing him to be in the 24th century. Perhaps an anti-time tunnel like what he encountered with Lazarus in "the Alternative Factor."

i just wish Generations had that adult Trek movie 'feel' of II/III/IV/VI meets TNG - where as it felt more like Trek V meets TNG

Yep Generations certainly had that relaxed 1990’s Bill Clinton era vibe about it - mass market appeal for the widest demographic at the time.

^Kirk not dying, him beating the bad guy and seeming to live, and be a cool beloved captain, forever, would seem a lot more trying to be mass-market.

Problem with that is that barring a tie, you'll just make everyone mad.

Unless it was against their will, and they secretly work together to stop the bad guy.

Actually, Shatner's books brought Kirk back after Generations, and I think what I would have in mind would have to be something doable in 2 hours. Shatner's stories were too epic for a movie. But I do think that there could have been so many great stories that could have teamed Kirk and Picard, and they literally managed to fall out of a boat and not hit water.

I WOULD have been cool with Judith and Gar Reeves Stevens writing this story. But for me, it would have to be something with no cheat. So no reset ending, no alternate history, and it might even make sense to have Kirk stay in the 24th century.

Honestly, if you take away Kirk's death from Generations, the movie isn't great, but it's much better because you remove the killing the legend thing.

Kirk not dying, him beating the bad guy and seeming to live, and be a cool beloved captain, forever, would seem a lot more trying to be mass-market.

Which is exactly what they should have done. Plus, it opens the door to use Kirk whenever they wanted.
