Would Enterprise have been better with Shran and a Tellarite added?

No. Not unless they planned on moving on from Bakula. Can't imagine someone like Shran being interested in anything less than a leader role.

I like this idea. The most interesting potential story in Enterprise was showing the formation of the Federation, and adding Shran and a Tellarite along with T'Pol would have offered an interesting microcosm of that drama. And it would have been nice if some Trek series managed the task of giving us a great Tellarite character.

And I liked Phlox, but there was always something odd about how prominent the Denobulans were during Enterprise, to never be seen again in any of the series set later.
Lol that's the nature of being of a prequel

Not if you're doing it well.

Not that I was that bothered by it. I just thought they had better storytelling options available to them on that issue.
Not as bad as Scotty thinking Kirk was alive in TNG Relics when he saw him die in the Generations movie prelude lol. I guess the writers of generations dint see the episode. Juts part of trek you have to embrace

Another great example of missing a much better storytelling option! That should have been Uhura in Generations. Such a missed opportunity. She could have been the one helping the El Aurians onto the ship. To have her and Guinan in the same scene together... it would have been quick, but so meaningful, given what those characters represent, and what Uhura meant to Whoopi.

But none of the clueless white men making the movie could see it, evidently.

Well, we have to wait to learn more about Tellarites and Andorians until ENT . We didn't get too much about Vulcans at TNG or DS9. Maybe one day we would have a franchise with Denobulan stories.

I have my problems with the writing of ENT, but I think at the end of the day, it was "the" franchise which keep the spirit of TOS, imho. We have reasoning about the things why they were as we know them. An that is exactly what a prequel should do.

ENT needed that element of Starfleet as an up-and-coming organization with real competition from established governments, so no, we didn’t want them embracing Starfleet at that level even before the Federation was founded.

I always thought that it could always be said that just because we never see them, doesn't mean they don't exist, but if there had also been competent writing, the Denobulans could have met some kind of catastrophic end in an allegory to something we were experiencing. I don't know what, but there was a missed opportunity there.

Outside of HopefulRomantic's suggestion, I really can't think of a way where Shran, the battle tested experienced commander serves under Archer, a man who he sees as a friend, but also feels superior to. You could bring him back multiple times a season, especially during a Romulan War where they are joint missions etc., but to put him on Enterprise, under Archer's command, would've neutered the character.

Would have been a good idea. I thought Earth should have been further along after 90:years with warp and Enterprise should have been more about creating the federation from season 1

I agree with both of these points.

p.s. FWIW, there was a Tellarite character in the S.C.E. series of books. He was written a bit like Winchester from M.A.S.H. which is perfect for a Tellarite, imo.

Oh man, I love Shran! I definitely would have wanted more of him in Enterprise, but I agree with Danny99 that having him serve under Archer would have neutered the character. However, he could have still become a regular cast member with suggestions people have already made with joint missions, Romulan War, etc. The more Shran the better! Shran plays off the Enterprise crew so well!

Shran is one of my favourite Trek characters in any series, so I definitely would have loved for him to have had a more prominent role in the show. That said, at that stage I’m not sure it would have made sense for him to have been a member of the crew. I think the relationship between Humans and Andorians would need to have developed a little more before that was viable. It would have been great to have an Andorian on the bridge every episode, though. How I love Shran.

Indeed, Shran under Archer's command would neuter the character. A military advisor role perhaps but even then, would Shran give up his own command to give Archer advice... that Archer wouldn't take? I can't see a way having Shran on the NX-01 would work without taking something away from the Shran we love.

Maybe Shran as armoury & tactical officer, while Reed became a MACO, maybe? Although Archer losing command of the NX-01 and being benched on Earth while Shran becomes captain could have been an interesting storyline for sure.

I think ENT needed to have an all human crew from the get-go. It does mean though that Phlox & T’Pol would have to be humans as well. Like, their characters and their histories could have been the same, just make them human.
