Would Clara's story make more sense for River?

The Wormhole

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Let's rewind a bit, pretend it's 2011, just prior to season 6 airing. River Song is still a blank slate among fans, we know she's someone enigmatic from the Doctor's personal future who somehow knows his true name and what all his faces look like. Now what if Moffat took the plotline from Name of the Doctor, specifically Clara getting seeded throughout the Doctor's timestream and meets up with various Doctors ultimately saving him from an attack upon his very existence and along the way being the one who sent him in the right TARDIS and used it for River instead? And for that matter what if it had been River who ended up visiting the Doctor as a child and inadvertently inspired him to go on his adventures?

I got to thinking about this earlier today and kind of feel the storyline might have been more satisfying and unexpected if indeed it had been used for River instead of Clara. Have a way for River to have such intimate knowledge of the Doctor instead of the obvious and predictable explanation of "they're married" that was ultimately used anyway.

Thoughts?

Still be funny if when Jenna Coleman decides to leave for real...Clare dies...then starts to regenerate. Cause they could plan that card for no good reason and still make it make sense. She could still be River, River did say they were connected, and "spoilers" the last time the Doctor saw her (her dead in the Library computer projected self)

I sometimes wonder what River's story would have been if Alex Kingston had been a regular companion on the show instead of just popping up from time to time. Some variation of Clara's story could have worked.

While I don't have any specific complaints about River's overall story, I do wish that they would do a stretch of episodes where River was a proper, regular companion, even if it was only for half a season.

As it is, she's never appeared for more than 2 consecutive episodes at a time. (Although she did appear in 4 out of 5 episodes during the period from "The Pandorica Opens" through "Day of the Moon.")

And I'd love to see River with Capaldi. I think that would sizzle in a totally different way from how she played off of Smith.
