Would a Trek Anime/Mangaverse work?

The recent movie has got me thinking about animating the original eps. I understand there were comics and a 1970s animated series. I'll order the old cartoon show soon but I've started think would a more hip, modern animated version of Trek work?

Some Japan animation is great, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Planetes spring to mind but I admit there's also a lot of crap in the anime verse about 50% or more of it should be completely avoided.

However I do think an anime Trek has great potential and the comicbook medium in general has potential

Well, it's BEEN done already. They even put out a TNG Manga too.

There have been a couple of anime that have been inspired by Trek here and there. Nadesico, in particular, had control panels aboard its hero ship that were more or less carbon copies of the LCARS interface with the crew uniforms a mix of every Trek uniform from TWOK to TNG...

I wouldn't mind seeing an actual Star Trek anime series. In fact, given Anime's influence on western animation, particularly, television series', I wouldn't be surprised if we wound up getting something along those lines.

I wouldn't mind seeing an animated series, but for God's sakes, have the animation style realist.
