Would 12 year old WIl Wheaton have fared better than 15 year old WIl?

They could have written his character as being under the tutelage of Riker. He relentlessly tried to score with any woman that came on the ship. Would have been good for a few laughs.

I never really disliked Wesley, although I probably would have liked him better had he been written as a more realistic teen, dealing with the kinds of problems real teens face, or acting out in ways that real gifted kids tend to do when not properly challenged. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it elsewhere but I would have liked to see an episode where he gets caught smoking space-weed out behind the warp core, or more episodes where he had to deal with the consequences of some other bad decision.
Tasha talked him out of that ;)

There's nothing wrong with Wesley being exceptional. If it had been played as the entire bridge crew thinking "Once that kid's finished academy he'll probably break the record for captain", and encouraging him, that would be fine.
But when he outperforms the top crew of the Federation flagship, episode after episode, that becomes unconvincing.

To be fair, the 'Listen to Wesley' trope is pretty much gone halfway through season one.

It doesn't really resolve the problem of him not seeming like a very realistic person for his age, even an uber-intelligent one, though.

I would have loved to see him get more characterization that explained/showed his lack of friends his own age, his desire to hang out with the senior staff, and his isolation.

Did he and his mom ever even share a meal on-screen?

And again I this idea problematic. Not every teenager gets high and I'm not "abnormal" or "not real" because of that. They don't have to shove that into everything.
It was just an example of a bad decision, which I used purely because I find the idea amusing. It doesn’t have to involve getting high, just that when you’re in your teens there is a tendency towards making bad decisions, and I would have found Wesley more interesting if he’d had to deal with the consequences of these decisions.

"Justice" Wesley: I'm with Starfleet. We don't lie.
"First Duty" Wesley: My friend screwed up and that's why he died. Or, y'know, not...

Gonna go on some limbs here, hope you all find it somewhat interesting. I find Reginald Barcley to be the "Grown up" version of Wesley to be honest. The way Wesley came up, I could see him having the same social awkwardness that Barcley had.

On that note, remember when Barcley got busted with Holo-kinky-Troi on the holodeck? Imagine the episode we coulda got if it was Wesley who had made holy-kinky-Troi instead.

I don't see the correlation between Wesley and Barclay at all.
Wesley was not very awkward at all once he got out of that lame sweater in season 1 or whenever.
He seemed to get along well with the other members of the crew, was placed on alpha squadron (or whatever it was called). He made friends with the Gatherer guy, the kid in Suddenly Human, the annoying professor when Wesley puts the nanites together, and the blue alien guy.
He seemed to do okay with the ladies as his relationship with Laffler, the shape shifting girl, and the mention that he had a date in Sarek showed.
He isn't afraid of everything like Barclay is. He even had his own command of a team in one episode. He wasn't afraid to offer suggestions unlike Barclay.

They kind of did that in "Evolution".

Not really. Everything turns out chipper in evolution. The creepy scientist gets to run his experiment, etc.
The First Duty, yes he is responsible for a death and gets held back a year at the academy. It's easily the best Wesley episode.

TNG isn't really a show I'd recommend watching for anyone interested in seeing the characters needing to wrestle with the consequences of their bad decisions. A downside of the largely episodic format.

Even Wesley being held back a year...granted he's not a regular in the show by this time, but it's barely a factor in the grand scheme of things. I don't think we even hear Beverley's thoughts on it?

Now that you mention it, you're probably right. That's really more of a DS9 / DSC thing.

DS9 episodes typically built on the previous ones.
TNG...everything was back to normal by the beginning of the next episode.

That would have been a much better episode. Putting a teenager in the role would make the story more relatable than creepy.

I don’t think the majority of people like overly smart charters as a whole. Never mind their age
