That line always seemed out of place to me as well. Starfleet is a military or quasi-military organization, not a business. Maybe Scotty being "fired" and later "re-hired" was some kind of private joke between him and Kirk?
I just took it as a bit of gallows humour between them, after all if Scotty can't work his engineering magic then they are all doomed so his being fired is the least of his worries.

EXACTLY. It was a grim joke between them, and they both understood it as such.

I am SO glad I wasn't the only one pointing that "You're fired" was a joke. I was afraid I might be. So many people are getting so straightforward now, without a sense of irony.

It had to be a joke unless "you're fired" is a colloquialism for "you're relieved of duty."

It's moot anyway. If Scotty can't get you out of there then you are truly screwed.

Of COURSE it's a joke!!! It's the military! He can't be fired! Scotty isn't Kirk's employee! They're going to die, not get fired! I am so sick of the 21st century...

I think 'You're fired'. Makes a better joke than 'You're demoted' as it is making it look like Scotty is in a normal corporate job rather than in a high risk semi military role.

Yes of course it was a joke, but military personnel can be fired from their job or assignment by their CO, it happens all the time. Their rank cannot be taken away without legal process, so they are usually reassigned to some inconsequential position, but firing effectively ends their careers.

This was hard, since "The Alternative Factor" is the series worst, but I had to go with "A Private Little War". Maybe it's because for me the Korean and Vietnam wars were ancient history by the time I was around and watching the show, so I didn't catch the real storyline and didn't really care for it. Plus what was up with the witch priestess in this episode? Was she really trying to cure Kirk or just on to much acid?

But "The Omega Glory" , "By Any Other Name", "The Immunity Syndrome" and "Friday's Child" round out the Top 5 worst of Season 2.

But Kirk was being completely serious in The Doomsday Machine when he said, "Scotty, you've just earned your pay for the week.", right?

Neil

Wait, I thought it was a society without mon- oh, I almost done a bad thing, there, George...

Whoa, back up there, Jack. Immunity Syndrome among the 5 worst of season two???

The whole "Scotty you're fired" thing annoyed me no end, among other aspects. How do you "fire" a seasoned, commissioned officer with years of fleet investment placed in him?

What he really should have said was, "Scotty, you'll be dead soon, so you won't mind me saying this for too long. Damn you for all eternity for getting my ship destroyed and crew killed!"

Neil
He meant the appreciative sentiment, but it was a joke of understatement, and it continued the earlier grim joke of trivializing the life-and-death situation by treating Scotty as just a employee who screwed up ("you're fired").
