Catspaw too. The guest stars weren't threatening enough to be scary. Even Apollo grabbing the Enterprise seemed like more of a threat.

Triskelion. Generally about season 2, it seemed to be about figuring out how to continue producing a whole season of episodes without the problems in season 1, that made them almost miss deadlines over and over. Season one had mostly big ideas, big apocalyptic threats, each story was sort of like a film. With season two, they had to insert "easier" episodes inbetween the "big" ones. More comedy, more "action" aka fistfights, more diplomacy that didn't require special effects... Trek has stayed with that formula ever since I think-- all the shows pace themselves.

Unfortunately it means those of us more hungry for challenging SF content end up having to sit through the weaselly Klingon's antics in Friday's Child, or South Seas albino aliens, or wagering brains.

I enjoyed the weaselly Klingon, but good post. I think the spinoffs relied on that even more, but that's probably for another discussion.

I feel no need to lower my standards just because somebody somewhere decided (without my getting a vote on it) television is a lighter, more trivial medium. It's just a medium, it can be used however one wants to use it.

I don't see what's "low" about good, well-written, well-structured, and compelling stories. Good storytelling is an art unto itself.

Hmmm. Not sure what path we've wandered off on. Well , I want good SF at the center of things, too. Fortunately, with ST, we got a lot of that. When we didn't, with ST, I tried to be patient.

I had a much tougher time with this one, but went with "Catspaw" for general lameness of concept.

Changed my vote from Catspaw to I, Mudd. Greg Cox made a decent case for Catspaw being ok in another forum.

If we end up with a tie we might have to have a run-off poll to break the tie before moving on to the third season. :)

The inhabitants of Gamma Trianguli VI didn't look much like albinos, except for the white hair. In fact, they looked like they'd spent too many hours in a tanning salon.

A plus for statisticians in Omega Glory is how misinterpretation of mortality statistics is part of the plot when the rogue captain thinks he's found the secret of eternal youth.
Of the 3 'leaders' in the poll Catspaw as a seasonal special is the least likely episode for me to pull out of the box set to take a look. Generally I think ,until recently , Halloween is a bigger event in the US than elsewhere.

"Return to Tomorrow." Boring, tedious, overly melodramatic. The quality of the episodes produced during the 2nd half of the second season showed a noticeable downturn, and this one is the worst of that lot.

I don't even think of Catspaw as "the Halloween episode," as I can't recall any jack o'lanterns, or really any specific trappings of Halloween in the episode. Similar to Greg Cox, I think of this as a fusion of science fiction with the cult gothic horror genre of the era, especially all those Hammer Horror movies (from the UK).

I've kind of pondered this thread for a few days now, and I believe, after reading through many fines posts, I made an error. I voted for Return to Tomorrow. After much reflection, and adjustment on perspective based on some of the views used, and also something I had long forgotten about, though it bugged me as a youngster watching TOS, The Apple to me is now the worst of Se2.

The whole "Scotty you're fired" thing annoyed me no end, among other aspects. How do you "fire" a seasoned, commissioned officer with years of fleet investment placed in him?

That line always seemed out of place to me as well. Starfleet is a military or quasi-military organization, not a business. Maybe Scotty being "fired" and later "re-hired" was some kind of private joke between him and Kirk?

I think that the Omega Glory would have worked better if they specified that they were visiting a post-apocalyptic Earth in a parallel universe,
