Worst Episode of TNG Season Two Part One

The Second Round for Season One is now complete, with "Code of Honor" the choice for TrekBBS's least favorite, in a poll that was a bit closer than I expected. It will compete against the "winners" from Seasons Two through Seven. So on with the voting!

As with Season One Part One, in this round you can select the THREE episodes that are your least favorite. When this round ends, the five top vote getters will face off to decide which is the worst from Season Two. Let the voting begin!

I voted for The Child (what a dreadful way to start a season), The Outrageous Okona (am I supposed to find Okona to be a loveable rogue? Because I don't), and Shades of Gray (no explanation needed).

Loud as a Whisper, Shades of Gray, and The Dauphin; all very poor episodes IMO.

"The Outrageous Okona" - Or as The Agony Booth dubbed it, "The Nutrageous! Okona".

"Up The Long Ladder" - After all of the talk about the unintentional racism in "Code of Honor", we shouldn't let this one slide. All it was missing was leprechauns.

"The Royale" - Some fans seem to love this one, some loathe it. I'm staunchly in the latter category.

Shades of Gray is an pick, so I went with that.

The Outrageous Okana was shit. Slutty bitches on Enterprise ready to shag the first scruffy looking nerf herder who comes on board.

And for the politically uncorrect choice, "Loud as a Whisper". The idea was intriguing on paper, the results...well I've never been able to rewatch it when it's on. One of those episodes where the crew take a back seat to a guest star...like it's freakin' Love Boat. I just have zero interest in watching that one again. I'd rewatch Okona and Shades of Grey first.

The Child sucked, too.

Give it time startrekwatcher. A vote here is good start and one I agree with.

I'm surprised by the hate for The Child...I've never found it too bad.

I voted for Outrageous Okona (painful), Up the Long Ladder (offensive), and The Royale (painful AND offensive).

My thoughts exactly. Not just the worst episode of the season, worst episode of the franchise. And this one can't be chalked up to unfortunate casting decisions, it's all there in the script.

Hmmm....I like Up The Long Ladder. I also like The Child.

I voted for:

Shades of Gray - dreadful episode, perhaps the worst of the Seasons 2-7.

The Emmissary - its not a terrible episode, but boring. The premise of a long dormant Klingon attack cruiser coming back to life in an era of Federation/Klingon peace has just promise, and it was utterly wasted in this episode. It built backstory for Worf, but I still wish they'd done more with the underlying story.

The Icarus Factor - ugh....

With regards to the Emissary I never quite understood why the Klingons would send a ship on a sleeper mission that took place 70 years after it was launched. What benefit did it serve compared to attacking immediately or simply waiting for another Chancellor 70 years later to decide to attack? It's not like the colony was that far away from Klingon space. It's like if the Soviets sent a sleeper submarine away for 70 years in the 60's to attack Florida with missiles. Surely circumstances would have changed greatly in 70 years to make the attack pointless.

Also, wouldn't a top of the line cruiser become massively out of date after 70 years without refits and updates?

That's true. I suppose I tend to give it more of a pass because I find the cloning rights issues with the other colony to be pretty interesting, so the episode isn't a total loss.

On the other hand, you're right that the Irish stereotypes in this episode are incrediby blatant. Maybe I've been too easy on it. I'll have to think about it a bit more.

"Shades of Grey," the first time I'd ever seen a science-fiction drama doing a clip show. I had, up to that point, thought that had been the purview of the sit-com.
