Wormhole chads

At the end of WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND, had you been on the Federation council, would you have voted for Bajor's admission into the Federation? Had sisko done enough to prepare them, before his untimely demise? In fact, did he even get close?

I would see the events of WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND as pushing the Bajoran people more toward their religion than ever before. Would that discount them for admission???

I would let them join the federation, because of the spiritual events in What you leave behind you. These events, especially the fight between pah-wraiths and prophets, are the final evidence, that there is more behind the bajoran religion than Bajor defending whorm-hole aliens. I would allow tham to join AND keep them have their religion and spiritual politic system!:klingon::cardie::bolian::rommie::vulcan::borg: and the powerwraiths: :evil::evil::devil::brickwall:

I would too..well..maybe. It might be the old 'slippery slope' thing if other worlds in the Federation demand that their religions be taken more seriously....tough choice...my chad is still hanging...wink wink

I don't recall anything indicating Star Fleet or the Federation has a disrespectful attitude about anyone's religion. I am guessing they would want Bajor because of the wormhole, if for no other reason. (Some consider it a good retirement location.)

What were to happen if the Bajorans decided to not let anyone use the wormhole, at all...for any reason. Is their joining the Federation contingent on them letting us use the wormhole?

Despite what Roddenberry probably wanted, there's nothing to suggest that religion is a barrier to Federation membership. After all, they'd labelled a Starfleet officer their emissary and were still being considered for membership in Rapture.

As to whether Bajor would want to join, different question entirely. the war would certainly have brought them and the Federation closer together. The most senior Bajoran officer on DS9 was given a Starfleet commission after all.

As a Federation member, Bajor (and its wormhole) would at least be protected from encroachment by other, more hostile entities.

To remove access to the wormhole would hurt trade etc. in that area, and Bajor would suffer. So I can't see them doing that.

They may have some more personal growth and development, esp. after being cut off from the Federation for part of the D. War, and as the Fed. rebuilt, there would be less time to help Bajor and deal with their admission. But I wouldn't put the entry of Bajor too far in the future.

I am not 100% sure Bajor would want admission. Remember, the last word from their Emissary was that it wasn't the time.

Plus, if I were them, I WOULD be concerned about the influence of a political body led by a world with such an aggressively secular culture--even if the Emissary happened not to have acted like that after awhile.

I was immensely annoyed that we didn't get to see it at the end of season six or beginning of season seven. I though that it would have been awesome to see an admission ceremony and get to see the Bejoran militia get "absorbed" by Star Fleet.

Yes, but that would have referred to the coming Dominion War- it would have gone poorly all around if they hadn't signed that non-aggression pact. The Dominion would have run right over them.

And thank you Kissthestar!!

Of course, the argument could be made that the only reason they got a chance to sign the non-aggression pact instead of getting steamrolled with the rest of the Federation was because they were NOT members, and therefore staying out of "entangling alliances" (as George Washington called it) is a good idea.

The argument against admission was the fact that they had no global or world government and the planet needed to rebuild itself, not rely on the Federation. With the discovery of the wormhole the Federation placed a Starfleet presence on the station to help "facilitate" the admission process (and conveniently monitor and "control" the wormhole. The spiritual aspect of the Bajorans wasn't much of a factor. The Federation doesn't dislike religion, but they wouldn't stand for a religion based government that would exclude non believers or trump fair elections. I think the 7 years since Starfleet showed up had helped change and monitor several important things on Bajor. Plus coming off of a war the increase in territory and personnel would likely suspend the lasts bits of doubt about Bajor becoming a member. Because of those factors I would (as a member of the council) most likely vote IN FAVOR.

Didn't the showrunners want to avoid having everyone in Starfleet uniforms?

Uh... the "Starfleet presence on the station" was there BEFORE the wormhole was discovered. (indeed, the "Starfleet presence" DISCOVERED the wormhole!)
