World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Wow, what an entertaining match and total curb-stomping :)

Very similar to Germany/England, minus the short burst of English offense in the first period of that match. Falling behind Germany seems to be quite a bad idea given their lethal counter-attack. Yikes.

The question with Argentina was whether or not their defense could hold up against a quality team...

Also, what is it with Klose? Frakking goal magnet.

Dutch and German final would be classic. I am looking forward to this the most.

C'mon Paraguay! Beat Spain!

Get in there Germany. Top stuff.

And that Uruguay game... first game of the entire tournament I didn't see live what are the fucking odds!? Suarez is a national hero though. Anyone would have done it. To vilify him, or start wanting rule changes, is a mass over-reaction.

What does piss me off is that he did the crime and gets his punishment - red card and suspension - as written in the law of the game. So FIFA are considering extending the ban? WHY? Because people are pissed off? Absurd. The punishment fits the crime because it's in the rules. How about FIFA stop fucking around with stuff like that and do something important like, I don't know, video technology?

I agree. Giving him a longer ban than is customary for intentional hands to prevent a goal (1 game) just because people are more pissed off than usual about it, would be totally wrong.

Longer bans should be reserved for dangerous fouls that threaten a player's health or extreme unsporting behaviour like attacking the referee or so.

I don't vilify him either. Although I'm very opposed to unfair plays (I can't stand Italy for that very reason), that was probably the most intelligent handplay ever to happen in soccer. Not even the Hand of God comes close to that.

You know, if he's "hard done by" and is banned for a couple games more than is customary ... then I don't care.

He certainly didn't care about fair play.

that was probably the most intelligent handplay ever to happen in soccer.

After watching the replays a couple times I still believe he could have easily cleared the ball with his head and if the penalty kick had been a goal he wouldn't have been a hero but the idiot who cost his team the chance to play in the semi-final.

Unbelievable. There are worse commentators than Béla Rethy. Why can't RTL just let Klinsmann do the talking? At least he knows what he's talking about.

Woohoo, go Germany! No more Brazil and no more Argentina makes Skywalker a happy boy. :D

Of the remaining teams, I'd like to see the Netherlands win, but I'd be totally cool with Germany, too.

Yeah, the ball wasn't too high that he couldn't have just hopped up and headed it away. But everything was probably moving too fast for him to think of that.

Despite my blow up yesterday, I'm still watching the Paraguay/Spain game. I just have to hope for a Netherlands bludgeoning and I guess I'll be happy. Better yet if Uruguay lose the consolation final as well.

I couldn't avoid the Germany spoilers though. 4-0... poor Argentina.

Who would have thought before this game that Paraguay would be the more offensive team?

They are keeping Spain under control very well, the Spaniards look almost seem clueless at what to do, which is an achievement already, but I'm sceptical if Paraguay can keep that up 90 minutes. It looks to me like they are playing a very exhausting style today.

Paraguay go!!!!!!! :D

That goal should have been allowed. The guy offside didn't touch it. The referee has been unfair to Paraguay on the whole, I think. There's been loads of free kicks for Spain for comparatively tiny offences, while Paraguay has had at least two situations where a free kick should have been had, but it was play on.

I hope Paraguay can keep this up. Despite having less of the ball, they have been the better team this half

Impressed with Paraguay's performance so far.

The (passive) offside situation was a tough call to make for the ref.
