World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

So the USA's run comes to an end - but as usual, I was impressed with their tenacity and spirit. Always good to have them involved.

Damn. Oh well, it's their own fault, they kept digging themselves a hole early on, and their defense kept getting caught asleep at the wheel.

I'm sorry to say this (as I'm heartbroken) but they did this to themselves (as Bradley has more or less just admitted). All that "comeback kid" bullshit came back to bite them in the ass. Ghana called the bluff.

Lesson learned: Conceding early and coming back to draw or even win may be extremely entertaining, but it is (as I said to iguana) a terrible football strategy.

Now that it's over, as a conciliation I'm glad an African team is still in it. They probably don't stand a chance against Uruguay, but they're keeping the continent's hope's alive.

:( I has a sad, but not an unexpected one.

Go Ghana! And Africa! Just 15 more minutes to hold on.

Ghana doesn't deserve it today, they are playing mind-numbingly boring.

USA have been playing well throughout the tournament, much better than I expected them to.

While a lot of Ghana's play wasn't the best, their two goals were brilliant, and USA's defence just faltered at those points.

Whether Ghana deserved it or not, this is the best result for the African tournament, and they managed to defend well enough to hold off the USA's many advances.

Also, all the English posters on here would never hear the end of it if USA got further than them. If we go out at the same point (as may happen tomorrow), at least we retain some of our dignity.

The US are Ghanas.

Warning for excessive Neroonisms. No comments anywhere. :p

Good effort by the US, couldn't finish a couple of sterling chances i.e. Altidore late, but when you're playing from behind every game, sooner or later it's going to catch up to you and today it did.

I think they played better than most people expected going into the tournament, though.

Huh, just saw a bunch of cars cruising down the street honking horns and waving the Ghana flag. Which is cool, but not what I would have expected in Edmonton

It was a good game - the momentum definitely swung back and forth. Ghana completely dominated the first half, the US played better in the second half, then Ghana picked it up again near the end of regular time and into extra time. Definitely happy to see them win. Hopefully they'll give a solid and entertaining game against Uruguay.

There's no question the US team plays with great heart. They've been a lot of fun to watch because of it and I think a lot of Americans have supported them even if they didn't normally watch soccer. That being said, just once I'd like to see a US team win because of overwhelming athletic superiority instead of hustle and heart.

This is too depressing... :(

We need to emulate the USA now, at least, when they played against Slovenia

ETA: Now that's a start!
