World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

There's an interesting article about the political repercussions of France's early out in the Swiss news paper NZZ (it's in German, though).
I really don't like this intermingling of politics with football, but it seems to be the standard now. I read today that our Chancelorette said her thoughts would be with the German team while she's at the G 20 summit in Toronto. Excuse me, don't you have more important things your thoughts should be with than a football game?
The UK's Prime Minister, who's also at the summit, has said that he'd watch the game, too.

Shockingly enough, considering how much of a circus US politics can be, the one thing we haven't really done yet is mingle sports with politics. :(

Well, politicians throwing the ball at baseball games or smiling into the camera at the Super Bowl or inviting popular athletes to the White House to congratulate them etc can all be considered mixing politics with sports. Politicians everywhere like to bask in the glory of successful athletes to improve their image themselves.

Yeah, the thing is though, the UK Prime Minister is a massive prick. Ignore him. He doesn't even like football.

Just looking at it now - real chance of Spain bombing out today. We can only hope. Nothing like a Cupset.

Yeah we do, just not with soccer. Just think of the baseball steroids thing.

Wow, that was a boring game, and I was only following it on the BBC website. I pity those who sat through all 90 minutes of it.

And now, Africa's hopes lie solely with Ghana, the only team of their's to survive this brutal group stage. A giantkilling tournament this may have been, but not for Africa.

Assuming things perform as expected in Group H tonight, that's 2 Asian teams out of 4, 1 African team out of 6, 2 North Americans out of 3, 6 Europeans out of 13, a number far lower than expected, and all 5 of the South Americans...

Ah, the ironically named Bravo... :bolian:

(More memorable a name than the similarly muppetish Higuita... although for goalies the best name is arguably Hilario :guffaw:)

Come back Robert Green, all is forgiven.

Torres is such a tool. I did win some money by betting he wouldn't score though, so at least he's good for something.

So, first eigth finals today. I hope that South Korea advances to the quarter finals, though it seems unlikely.
I don't really care who wins in the other game. On the one hand, it would be cool if at least one African team stayed in the tournament, on the other hand there seems to be a football euphoria in the USA at the moment and it would be sad if it ended already.

Does anyone call this phase of the tournament "Second Round" anymore? Now it's all "Knockout Phase" and "Round of 16" and all that stuff.
