World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Pheeeewww.
I can't believe Australia defeated Serbia. I'm glad that therefore Ghana is still in the tournament. They're pretty bad at using their chances, which was good for us, but doesn't add to their chances to get far.

The US gets a rematch with Ghana. That should be fun. Anyone know of any good places in Sacramento CA to watch the game because unfortunately, that's where I'm going to be on Saturday. Don't want to miss it. :(

Ghana against the States, Germany and England.

I'll take both Group D teams, I'm still not sold on the Americans and the English didn't have a great game today.

Interesting fact from the BBC website: all this means that one out of USA, Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana will reach the semis.

I say Uruguay FTQW. :bolian:

BTW, love your description/rank thing right now. It could be Vous Voulez if you want more Vs (and my French doesn't suck).

But then it doesn't fit in with the song, innit?

Creole Ravescene Marmalade.

My God, would it kill the guys at German tv to show a summary of the other game?

ETA: Is it just me or is the German football association boss very reserved regarding the team and Jogi Löw?

I smell plenty of drama. Given the state of the German defense, this could go either way, despite England's weakness in the offense. Since I support both teams, I win in any case.

And I also lose in any case. :(

Has the potential to be a very interesting game, would have liked to meet Germany later on but if you're going to win the cup whoever you are you need to beat comparable teams.

Frankly from what I saw tonight I'm almost relieved we haven't got Ghana...

Really? Ghana hasn't scored any field goal in this tournament and the game today showed why. They had a number of excellent chances but were unable to score, even against a pretty shaky defense.

I hadn't expected Australia to win this, at all. What happened? I saw a summary and it looked as if the first Australian goal came out of nowhere.

I hate them for putting me on edge like that. :scream:  It's maddening. Every game they've been in has been a nail biter. It's high drama, worthy of a good Klingon ballad.
That's football for you. :techman:
Which makes it very entertaining. But it's also bad footballing and eventually someone (Germany, Ghana?) is going to call their bluff, score early and then build a fortress of 11 men to defeat our famed "comeback kid" momentum.
Maybe, but so far I'm highly entertained, and that's all I ask of the World Cup. Well, that and Cannavaro rising the cup again. ;)

England vs. Germany

I smell penalties :(
I smell plenty of drama.
And I love the smell of football in the morning! :techman:

I saw the score here, was quite happy to finally get a win. But since the weekend, kinder lost interest in the world cup, as my geek side of me took over. Been about a 30 seconds highlight of it this morning here (as something much bigger has happened here)

Thank you, Landon Donovan! Round of 16, here we come! :D

The group's final standings worked out especially well for me, as I'm off on Saturday but will have to work on Sunday. So I'll be able to watch the US/Ghana match! :techman:

Lots of antagonism between those two teams, that's for sure.

Although finishing top of the group would have ensured a relatively easier path to the SFs, the prospect of matches against Germany and Argentina is particularly mouthwatering!

TBH, based on yesterday's games I fancy us to knock out Germany, but it depends on which England and Germany teams turn up on Sunday.

Nice World Cup for the English-speaking countries, eh? USA and England in the next round, Australia just narrowly missing and even New Zealand is having a good time.

The first goal was Cahill doing what Cahill does. The second was a screamer. Then Schwarzer produced a howler. :(

Oh, well. We were never going to overcome that crap performance against Germany - just can't concede four goals at this level and expect things to fall into place afterward. Hopefully we'll get a decent manager now and rebuild.

I'm now reduced to hoping New Zealand can somehow get through to the last 16.  Seriously, I hope they can do it.
