World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

It's from a qualifying match for the World Cup 2006 against Austria, where James made a mistake very similar to Green's against the USA.

Our lack of goals is troubling, but the flipside of that is that we're three games unbeaten and have so far only conceaded one goal...which was down to our keeper! Plus I agree with Angel, we were creating chances yesterday and if Rooney gets one goal I expect him to get more...

I vaguely remember that one, thanks.

Considering the number of times that James has played for England since then, without similar incident, I think it's fair to say that that mistake was the exception rather than the norm. ;)

There's no way of saying this without it sounding arrogant, so I'll just say it. A lot of the smaller teams see England, along with Brazil as being the ultimate scalp, and as such put in much more effort against us.

Yes, all of the big name teams have that problem. I've only seen a few scenes from Algeria vs. USA and I missed England's game against Algeria, so I can't compare, but still, England was the clear favourite in this one and part of having a big name in football is to beat teams like that despite their efforts.

I had the same thought but I'm not sure whether that's due to the strength of the English defense or the weakness of the other teams' offense. I don't think the English defense has really been tested so far.

Italy vs Slovakia starts in half an hour. Let's hope that we'll win at least one game in the group stage.

ITALIA! ITALIA! ITALIA! :D

Yeah, I hope it'll be a good game. I also finally get to see one game of our Dutch friends this evening, though it comes with the stupid RTL commentators... Maybe they'll let Jürgen Klinsmann say a bit more this time.

Italy could be out even if they win this game? :wtf:

No, Italy doesn't necessarily win the group even if they beat Slovakia, but they are guaranteed in the round of 16 because New Zealand and Paraguay take points away from each other. Italy has 5 points if they win, Paraguay and NZ can't both get to 5 points anymore (only one of them can).

I'm rooting for Italy and NZ in the afternoon games; would be rooting for Slovakia, but I'm afraid their cause is hopeless.

Ah, well, good to know. Another case of German commentators talking bullshit. I really should go along with a drinking game designed around stupid stuff they say.

I guess he meant to say that a draw might not be enough because he said it right later. A Freudian slip.

Yep. Poor guy. :(

ETA: Seems like he can continue playing. Good for him. And Gattuso, who seemed genuinely sorry.
