Well, that was boring, Spain. Maybe it's just me but I think the games in this tournament have mostly been less than stellar. Hopefully, it'll get better in the knock-out stage.

I think it's interesting how important football has become or, more precisely, how 'vulgarised' politics has become. The old generation of politicians might have been just as interested in football but they would never have brought it up or even taken some form of action.
I thought about this before the World Cup, when I learned that the German Chancellorette would have visited the German team in their training camp if the President hadn't resigned. I personally think that's outrageous. What the hell is she doing there? And who's paying for the visit? It's not her job to cheer up the millionaires there and have the tax payer pay for it.
Politics has turned into a show and thus politicians seek to be associated with the most popular sport. It would have been impossible under the old statesmen in Europe.

In all fairness it might be okay - squad players trying to make an impact and there's incentive to avoid Spain in the next round I suppose (though whether Spain finish 1st or 2nd is hard to predict) - but it might lack some verve.
