World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Is this right? Apparently Wolfang Stark is going to be reffing England's final group game.

How does that work considering that we could potentially play Germany in the next round? No conflict of interest there then......

Normally I might see a conflict of interest here, but not this time around - Germany is *not* afraid of meeting England right now. At least no more afraid than of meeting the US.

Exactly, there'll be concerns that Herr Stark will throw the game England's way to set up an easy 2nd round match against England........!

Hilariously strict refereeing in the Switzerland vs. Chile match. Loads of aggro amongst the players and the ref isn't helping. :p

Well, that was boring, Spain. Maybe it's just me but I think the games in this tournament have mostly been less than stellar. Hopefully, it'll get better in the knock-out stage.

In other news, the French team apparently have their own soap opera going. They might be on strike in their last game, or at least some of the players.

And to add to the drama : the minister of sport came to make the players cry :guffaw:
(I must confess that Roselyne Bachelot can be scary sometimes ;) )

Right, I read about that. This whole thing is now a political concern. Charles de Gaulle would have never lowered himself to those levels.

I think it's interesting how important football has become or, more precisely, how 'vulgarised' politics has become. The old generation of politicians might have been just as interested in football but they would never have brought it up or even taken some form of action.
I thought about this before the World Cup, when I learned that the German Chancellorette would have visited the German team in their training camp if the President hadn't resigned. I personally think that's outrageous. What the hell is she doing there? And who's paying for the visit? It's not her job to cheer up the millionaires there and have the tax payer pay for it.
Politics has turned into a show and thus politicians seek to be associated with the most popular sport. It would have been impossible under the old statesmen in Europe.

WORLD CUP FOOTBALL: England vs Slovenia - June 23rd

Well the Football match that England has to win in order to get through the group is almost upon us. This is the most important match England is going to have had thus far in the entire tournament. It's the make it or break it match.

So what are your thoughts on the upcoming match? Will England win, lose or draw?

What do you see the score being?

Re: WORLD CUP FOOTBALL: England vs Slovenia - June 23rd

Oh thanks, didn't know about that thread. But still, I think because this match is so important for England I think it deserves it's own thread. :p
Bleah. I imagine there'll not be much to post if the game emulates the first two.

I'm interested in the Brazil vs Portugal match.
I don't know. A misfiring Ivory Coast team and a decent Portugal team would have to engineer a nine goal swing for things to change in that group.

No, I just think those two teams are two of the best in the world and it will be like the clash of the Titans which to me will mean it's going to be an interesting game to watch.

Re: WORLD CUP FOOTBALL: England vs Slovenia - June 23rd

In all fairness it might be okay - squad players trying to make an impact and there's incentive to avoid Spain in the next round I suppose (though whether Spain finish 1st or 2nd is hard to predict) - but it might lack some verve.

Re: WORLD CUP FOOTBALL: England vs Slovenia - June 23rd

I think England will only manage a draw at best, which will mean an early exit for them unless the Algerians stun the US squad.
