World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

So, any thoughts on today's upcoming matches?

I think Argentina/South Korea is going to be the best of the three. I'll be pulling for South Korea, but Argentina will probably win. :barf:

I think Nigeria is going to beat the tar out of Greece. The Greeks haven't looked at all convincing, and I doubt they'll get anything past Enyeama.

As for France/Mexico...well, that one should be interesting. As an American of partial French descent, and being a bit of a Francophile, I'll be pulling for France, but it wouldn't surprise me if Mexico came out of that match with three points.

This is France we're talking about. It wouldn't surprise me if Mexico came out of that match with four points

Argentina v South Korea should be good. Winner tops the group, you'd have though. Nigeria, I suspect, will destroy Greece (worst team in the tournament IMO).

I do feel sorry for South Africa, but they really should have tried playing two up front. Mphela was getting nowhere on his own. Forlan ran that game though - deflection helped for the first goal sure - but a masterful performance from him. I fancy them to top their group now.

I think Argies will beat South Korea 2-0 and Nigeria should beat Greece too. As for Group A I feel it could easily end up a draw but am going to call it as a 2-1 win Mexico. Spain are in trouble now because Chile look good attacking so they could easily slip up and draw there leaving them in 3rd and out of the World Cup come next week.

When we look at England's result it seems better and better with...

Italy the defending champions drawing
France drawing
Spain losing
Brazil struggling to win against North Korea

All superior teams (well maybe not France )

Damn it, I'm missing out on these pictures at work!

Shame about Spain yesterday <snigger>. Of course they're not out yet, but it does make it highly likely that they'll meet Brazil in the second round now, meaning that one of them will be out early.

Today's games;

South Korea vs Argentina, definitely the pick of the games. If Argentina are a bit more clinical than they were against Nigeria then they should win by a couple. Hopefully though they'll be just as wasteful and South Korea get something out of the game.

Nigeria vs Greece - can't see anything other than a Nigerian win. Greece were absolutely woeful in their opening game whereas Nigeria were a little unfortunate in the end not to get something against Argentina.

France vs Mexico - I foresee another goalless draw. Probably the most important game of the group this one as I think whoever wins this will get second spot. Can't see either catching uruguay now. France don't see to have a great number of goals in them, and with Uruguay knocking in three last night, they look to be favourites from the group IMO.

I'm not sure why anyone thought the result vs the USA was such a disaster anyway, I'd pretty much assumed we would draw anyway. We never start well. Algeria tomorrow night will be the big test.

I'm hoping chilie get to the next stage.

Well there's loads of goals in this World Cup now. Argentina pretty comfortably beating South Korea - still not looking great, but doing the job easily enough.

I did expect South Korea to do better than that but their defense really sucks. The game didn't look as great as I thought it would, either. I wasn't impressed by Argentina, either, despite the high win. They seem to have some problems with their defense, too.

Well. Well. Greece won! That's history made, their first goal and their first win in a World Cup.

Shame about Nigeria though. That's two African teams all but out before we've even reached the third set of group games. And in Africa's world cup too. :(

I'm calling now for Argentina and South Korea to get out of Group B. I can't really see any other result, unless Greece pull a shocker in their final match, which will take some doing.

As for Group A, I'm still hoping that SA will strike some huge luck and come second, but at the moment its looking like Uruguay and either France or Mexico, depending on who wins tonight's game.

All hope is not lost for Nigeria. They have to beat South Korea, Argentina has to beat Greece and they have to improve their goal difference in relation to Greece by two goals. That's far from impossible in my opinion. And if they can't even take one victory away from the group than they don't deserve to be in the 1/8 finals anyway.

eta: no, any victory will do, goal difference doesn't matter at all, unless I'm completely misunderstanding something. That makes it even more possible for Nigeria. Especially since I don't think it's Maradona's mentality to give away a game only to give some of his players rest time.

So far, a good game. Both teams have chances. And you can actually hear the fans for a change.

Wow! Finally a goal. I thought Hernandez had to have been offside, but apparently he was just barely onside.

Now France really has to get their act together which, frankly, I have a hard time seeing them doing after their performance so far.

2-0 to the men in green, against France. :bolian:

Something that should have happened in the qualifiers. :p
