World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Congratulations to Webb. He was successful in giving Spain the cup.

Giving the Dutch cards for every shit. Blowing the whistle every time a Spaniard demanded it.

Oh come on. The Dutch were lucky to just get one guy sent off - De Jong's kung-fu kick was the single most brutal action of the tournament.

I wanted the Dutch to win but Spain outplayed them today, in a messy game.

I blame that goddamn octopus.

Are you kidding me? They got of way too easy. Two red cards not given and one penalty against them not given either.
These were the Dutch from Nuremberg '06 where they and Portugal basically slaughtered each other.
I don't wanna see a team like this win, ever.

Spain is the deserved winner, because they actually tried to win instead of just committing foul after foul.

Congratulations, Spain! :bolian:

Granted, De Jong could have gotten a red card.

But many of the yellow cards were a joke, the so-called penalty was the Spaniard tripping over his own feet and Iniesta should have gotten a red card for that body check, too.

And that's totally ignoring all the diving of the Spaniards and them demanding yellow cards for the Dutch all the time, which is a warnable offense in its own right.

Holland played like brutes, they deserved to lose.

Yes, Iniesta should have gotten a red card for the swipe .. but his swipe came in response to a clear yellow-card foul of Van Bommel's on him - Van Bommel stepped right on his foot, full-blast.

So Webb had the choice of either sending both guys off, or neither. Letting the two things cancel eachother out was definitely in the interest of the game.

Add a clear penalty Spain was not given, and it becomes really, REALLY hard to claim that the Dutch were not treated fairly here.

The only yellow card the Dutch got that seemed undeserved was Van Bronckhorst's ... which didn't influence the game, as Van Bronckhorst is one of the few semi-clean players on that team of thugs.

SPAIN!!!

Oh, you know I was supporting them all along... :shifty:

I think they deserve it. They recovered well from their early defeat and worked their way to the Final.

But Iniesta who should have been off the pitch more than once during the game gets away with everything. Plenty of fouls, diving like Klinsmann in his prime, always demanding yellow cards for his opponents and finally that body check.

The best Spaniard was wearing a lighter blue today.

Let me guess who you rooted for ;)

The way i saw it was that Netherlands should have been in the single digit players 2/3rds through the game.. the played a very dirty game and should have even been punished harder but this being a finale most refs only send players from the field if they absolutely have to.

Anyway.. go Spain! A well deserved win by playing good football. They are at the top of their game right now being European and World Champions and i just hope that Germany can rise to this level in a few years when those very young players have more experience.. talent they have in abundance.

And Thomas Müller is the top goalgetter of this World Cup and gets FIFA's Golden Shoe. Pretty cool for someone who didn't even play professionally a year ago.

I assume that he gets it because of the players on 5 goals, he reached that number first?

I wanted Holland to win before the game, I can't stand Spain. Throughout the course of the game my allegiance switched to somewhere that wished that both teams could lose. Holland just kicked lumps out of anything that moved and Spain exaggerated the situation by taking tumbles at the slightest touches and demanding yellow cards for it.

In hindsight, Webb should probably have sent someone off early on to set the bar. He didn't and it escalated from there.

All in all, a difficult game to referee. Personally I thought he got it wrong with the foul on the Dutch lad just before the Spain goal.

1st half was boring but after that the game got much better and I felt the last 75 minutes in total was pretty good. Both sides had chances but it was a cool finish in the end though goalkeeper could of done better IMO.

Webb had a good game overall because the players were acting like kids on a park, they should really grow up. Holland tackling at times was wofeul at best and Spain acting at tiems was so day time soap levels.

The so called foul before the goal was nothing, am sorry the Dutch guy saw the smallest gap and thought yeh I'll smack the ball through and run into the gap big enough for a player half my size, not a foul he had no control of ball and played for it.

Robben the only time you should go down and you stayed on your feet  Irony.

Overall everything apart from the matches was great in this World Cup but in the end the matches make or break a World Cup. Overall the hit n miss matches make this probably on par with 2006 that was ruined by shite refs and cheating everywhere.

2002 and 1998 the other two World Cups I've watched were much much better.

You're a harsh critic!

The keeper did very well to get anything on it, it would have been a minor miracle had he got enough on it to turn it around the post. The angle of the shot and the power on it, he didn't have a chance really.

I just hope that Müller stays grounded and won't be affected by all the attention and praise he's now getting. His professional career has started with a tremendous boost but i'm confident because he's got an excellent trainer with Van Gaal who'll keep him in check and develop him well and from what i saw in interviews he seems pretty grounded.

Müller gets to be top scorer because while tied with 2 other players he has more assists and therefore wins top scorer. Didn't knew that until the german commentator mentioned it after the final.

Webb did what he could in a very rough match but sending off a player early in a game (especially in such a huge game) can be game deciding and refs usually don't like that role. That he went the yellow route was his way to keep the worst in check though he still made some errors (however not nearly as bad as other, e.g. the 2nd english goal vs. Germany or the Argentina/Mexico game).

On a related note:
The best player of the tournament is:

Diego Forlan

That was unexpected, but I guess after todays martial arts exhibition, FIFA decided to give neither team any more titles.
