World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Ugh, the Dutch and the Spanish... the semifinals couldn't have worked out any worse for me.

New World Champions this time on Sunday. Brilliant. I always like it when an 'outsider' wins, and Spain and Holland both deserve to have won it.

Germany just floppped in this match. I'm sorry, but there was no sign of the team who trounced us and Argentina. Maybe it was Muller's absence. Yeah, Germany, blame your loss on Mulller. :)

Sad Panda now :(:(

Well.. Spain clearly was the better team today and had the match under control for the most part.

Germany couldn't play "their" game and Spain scored (had to happen). Germany was lucky not to get a 2nd goal when that spanish player made this huge mistake and didn't pass the ball.. could have sealed the deal in that phase of the game.

Well.. see you in 2 years for the european championships and in 4 for the next world championship with many very young german players having far more experience guided by the awesome german team management under Jogi Löw.

Maybe.. that guy is amazing at 20 years of age.. i expect him to be one of the best players of the world in a few years with a bit more experience (he's already very cool for his age and at this international level). However if a team would depend on a single player this much and can't win without him then that team is shit and not worthy to win at all.

Sidenote:

God is it quiet now here.. not a single voice, vuvuzela or car to be heard. It's like Germany has died.

Oh well, the old Spain from '08 is back, I guess.
Still, I'm very proud of our young team. Never would have guessed they would make it that far.

Good game and congratulations are in order.
I'll definitely be supporting Spain against the Netherlands.

Sure, Müller would've won that game. ;)

I think Müller's a much better player than Trochowski, but I don't think you can blame that. In fact, I'm not really sure how Germany could've played today and won. I mean sure, if one of the (few) chances Germany had had gone in and Spain hadn't scored from that corner kick ...

Spain was the better team tonight. Though I do think it was a somewhat close affair. At least compared to the EC2008 final where Germany was very lucky to lose by just one goal.

For my next act of clairvoyance: I have Germany beating Spain 3-1.
Paul the octopus doesn't share your optimism.
Ok, now I'm officially scared.

Actually, it was one of the few instances where my fellow countrymen acted almost like adults!
What kind of person runs on the field in the 3rd minute?

Do it later on and at least get your money's worth for the ticket!
Apparently I have to eat my words, since the invader was Italian and he had a t-shirt saying "Cassano on the national team", Cassano being the name of a famous Italian player that was excluded by the Italian coach due to personal disagreement. :guffaw:

Anyway, I hope Holland wins the final ... not because Spain beat Germany, but because I dislike countries winning consecutive tournaments. Spain already won the EC two years ago.
I think Spain are favorites, but I think Holland has a team that is better suited to play a team like that of Spain than Germany.

So the two perennial underachievers of European - world? - football have made the final. Nice.

I know which of them I want to see win it, but I don't want to jinx them by commenting. :D

Yeh, too close. Spain have been very quiet this tournament, no big wins, unlike their opponents who they bested tonight (Curiously reminiscent of Germany in 2002, actually). I expect we'll see Germany again in Euro 12, where they'll be much more of a threat. They'll have pretty much the same players, but with the experience of a major tournament behind them. That could make them deadly.

I really couldn't pick between these two sides left now. It could be either of them. Either way, I'm excited for Sunday.

I was shocked to see Germany so manhandled after running over England and Argentina.

I'll be throwing my support behind Holland on Sunday. I'm not a big fan of seeing one country reign supreme over a sport, unless it's Canada with hockey.

Well, at least there was one Italian in the semis. ;)

Either way it goes on Sunday, one team will lift the World Cup for the first time in their history.

I hope it's Holland. They've already lost in the final twice. It would be sort of tragic if that happened again. It'll be a pretty boring game, though, I think.

Well obviously my first choice to win the WC would always be England ;) but that aside my next pick would always be for a team who's never won it before, which is what we're going to get. I hope it's Holland, as said above if only because Spain won the Euros 2 years ago.

Is it right that only 8 countries have ever won the WC? (Well one way or another 9 now I guess)

^ Only 7 countries have won the world cup. Only 5 countries have won the cup away from home.

Whoever wins this Sunday will be the 8th.

I am thinking the third time will be the charm for the Oranje.

Hup Holland Hup!

I don't think anyone was more excited by Spain's goal today than these two guys:
