Wonder Woman(NBC) *Spoilers!*

I thought Palicki was fine in those clips, but the writing is dreadful (at least judging from the boardroom scene), and the costume they came up with just DOESN'T work. It looks cheap as hell and undermines what is otherwise a pretty kickass action sequence.

I'm also not completely crazy about WW using her lasso like a bullwhip. She should be fierce in battle, but that just didn't look quite... right.

I thought the clips weren't quite as horrible as Blatr seemed to, but I don't know if I'd really say they were good either. I really think there were some worthwhile ideas here, but it's just that the delivery of these ideas might not have been the greatest.

I'm sure, like the new Knight Rider, it would have been a cheesy guilty pleasure for a while, but in the long run that probably wouldn't have been worth the damage it did to the character's reputation.

Better to hold off and try later for a proper WW movie I think.

Well I'm watching it.

Seems like the cross between a telenovella and a perfume ad.

Rule #1, you can't have a black kid on TV called "Willis" dying of a drug overdose with blood pumping out of her eye sockets without someone making an obvious joke like "Watchu bleeding out your eyes about Willis?"

Gods below, she said "warpspeed"

Palicki isn't dressed like a superhero. She looks like a barmaid at a honkey tonk saloon.

They're making a big deal about it being how bad it is that she's above the law but everyone gives Wonder Woman a wide berth because... No, there's no because, maybe something about if people think she's form a comic they'll treat her like she's in a comic.

Good lord! It's a Gilmore Boy! And they made him suck a little bit too.

**Sigh**

Oh my.

She looks good in the briefs, I have no idea why they even bothered with those Wondergirl trousers in the first couple scenes?

I have to believe that Kelly was trying to make a shit show on purpose to serve some twisted agenda on his part?

In the final two scenes, first she's drinking a glass of wine writing her facebook page, and then seconds later she's drinking a bottle of beer watching the TV people gush over her perfectioness.

How does it go?

Beer after wine, that's fine.
Wine after beer, oh dear.

Well nothing to worry about here except liver faliure.

Awful.

I've seen about ten episodes of 7 days today and even with my perceptions skewed by absorbing all that shit into my conciousness, lowering my expectations, this sucked ass hard. Kelly didn't even write a comic book story from his youth, it seems more like one of those Super hero twinkies adds from the 70s...

There was nothing exceptional about this pilot.

Even Lake Bell followed direction better than this new girl.

What was up with the plane?

It looked like it escaped form a carnie spinning amusement ride.

Just bland.

I was spoiler free.

Somewhat.

I'd only see a few stills up to this point.

I thought motion would smooth out the kinks.

How "Diana" kept changing into formal wear to head up her company even though everyone knew she was Wonder Woman was just odd, it deflated any feasible suspension of disbelief that this was a larger than life character more so than Just a CEO with a rough trade hobby.

Themycria sounds too much like Mascara that it seemed a little on the nose (pun?) that her villain she was facing off against this week was a cosmetics manufacturer among other wheelhouses.

I could see that but I'm still on the fence of whether it was good or bad, it was an interesting take.

Rule #1, you can't have a black kid on TV called "Willis" dying of a drug overdose with blood pumping out of her eye sockets without someone making an obvious joke like "Watchu bleeding out your eyes about Willis?"

I would state that as more simply that you can't have a black kid named Willis without "Whachu talkin' 'bout Willis?" popping into your head and yes, it did.

She looks good in the briefs, I have no idea why they even bothered with those Wondergirl trousers in the first couple scenes?

To set the fanboys crazy when the initial pics leaked, of course. However, they also provided an in-story out for going to the classic costume, it sells.

I'm not quite sure what to say, it was cheesy but moved along well. It was kinda like Ally McBeal or something and yet she threw a pipe into that security guy's throat. It seemed like it would work on CW but I'm not so sure about NBC where it was intended.

Just watched it and yup, it was bad. Thin, vapid, and one-dimensional, with a simplistic story that felt like something out of a bad 90s syndicated action show. And the costume just looked embarassingly cheap.

It was basically a superhero version of Ally McBeal, but without a trace of that show's wit or originality.

I know NBC has made some strange decisions in the past, but not picking this up was almost a no-brainer.

I saw it and here's what I have to say...

Adrianne Palicki
That woman is drop dead gorgeous. I spent a good portion of the episode entranced by her beauty. When Diana was holding that press conference, I couldn't help but notice that she had the perfect figure. She was tall with a physique that could work equally well for a supermodel and warrior. I also liked her unique hair style, and those ample breasts really stood out. Talk about network support.

Now, does she embody the character she plays? Not completely. I found myself vacillating between thinking she was perfect and thinking that she wasn't quite Wonder Woman. I think the network did a good job in casting a gorgeous and capable lead, but when I saw her as Wonder Woman, she still came off as too girly both in looks and in attitude. And that outfit still looked like a plastic costume you could buy at the store. Seeing it in action didn't help anything. I have to say though that the underwear came off better than the pants when seen in action. I liked her better as both versions of Diana. As Diana Themiscyra, she looked better than her Wonder Woman alter ego and came off as more collected and sophisticated. And as Diana Prince, she had a certain down-to-earth-girl-next-door-who-looks-hot-under-those-glasses-and-ponytail appeal. That leads me to another thing... I didn't see the point in her having the "Diana Prince" secret identity. Whatever usefulness it might have wasn't apparent in this pilot.

The Show
It had a few good ideas. I liked seeing Diana as a sophisticated corporate head. I also liked the rationale for the costumes (she deliberately set herself up as a superhero to sell action figures). I even liked the various Wonder Woman concept designs we saw in the background. The show itself though seemed very ordinary in the same vein as Bionic Woman and No Ordinary Family. Not bad, just not inspired. I would still have been a dedicated viewer though. It is Wonder Woman afterall. I probably would have been more interested in the daily drama of the attractive and sophisticated Diana Themiscyra than in seeing a hotheaded and girly Wonder Woman in action.

Other Points

- I had a black and white cat named Sylvester too.

- Cary Elwes and Liz Hurley were good.

- Interesting how they got all those celebs to make cameo appearances.

- I'm surprised that she could get away with killing someone, but they did manage to wave away any trouble she might be in with a bit of TV logic.

- I was wondering what she was going to put down as her occupation when she was doing her facebook page.

In the final two scenes, first she's drinking a glass of wine writing her facebook page, and then seconds later she's drinking a bottle of beer watching the TV people gush over her perfectioness.

How does it go?

Beer after wine, that's fine.
Wine after beer, oh dear.
The last few nights, I've been having ginger wine and de-alcoholized beer together.

It was basically a superhero version of Ally McBeal, but without a trace of that show's wit or originality
Also, that concept needed to be reserved for She-Hulk
Hey, yeah.

Jesus!

That was Carey Elwes?

THAT WAS CAREY ELWES!

Jesus...

I mean, Jesus.

I saw him on Psych last year, so can handle it that he's old and fat, because it's not the 80s and he's not 23 anymore but... Jesus Christ almighty... That is the worst American accent I have heard perhaps ever.

I remember Carey being passable in Comicbook Villains, and he sneaks into stuff all the time, but that was awful...

Has he had a stroke recently?

Carey Elwes?

THE Carey Elwes?

Jesus.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

There was a news report a few weeks ago that Warners has commissioned a Green Lantern 2, so I wouldn't say they're retreating. (Plus there's been some mutterings that the anti-3-D backlash might have played a role. The big indicator will be in how well the 2-D DVD/Blu-Ray (and 3-D Blu-ray) sells this fall.
They commissioned a Superman Returns script as well and Singer was pushing it for the longest time. All the while everyone knew it was never going to happen and Returns fared better than GL, even if you add back in those development costs from failed attempts.

The indicators are already in, GL just didn't make the cut. I'd love to be wrong but DVD sales are not going to be some saving grace for the film.

Be that as it may, we've seen sequels made for far lesser films (box office wise). Blade comes immediately to mind. Unless there's been an announcement to the contrary, WB is still on record as saying they're planning a sequel. And until the DVD/Blu-ray comes out, we don't have all the "indicators". Box office is no longer the only criteria, just as live viewing is no longer an indicator for TV. Case in point: Torchwood Miracle Day. The BARB organization in the UK just released the final ratings for episode 1. Initial viewership was really low - 4 million - but once online streaming and rebroadcasts were factored in, the ratings were on par with the hit Children of Earth. So everything is happy again.

You're right - the WB never made Superman Returns II, despite commissioning it. But it's still premature to armchair quarterback and say they won't make it until they say they won't make it. Because they're taking a lot of factors into account that we don't have access to. It's no different than everyone who was assuming NBC would buy the Wonder Woman pilot (note the subtle way I brought this back on topic?) but they looked at various factors before passing. And the quality of the pilot itself? I can almost guarantee that was NOT a factor, given the types of shows that do make it to air these days.

I thought the corporate thing had potential at first, but the way they tried to realize it just didn't work for me at all. Sitting in board meetings discussing WW merchandise? Complaining about the size of a doll's tits? She only wears her iconic costume to help sell toys??

I'm not a huge WW purist or anything, and I don't mind making her softer and more human, but I just couldn't see why this great Amazonian warrior would be wasting SO much of her time in the shallow, vapid business world, running a company and dealing with trivial matters like toys. Especially with her superpowers and the real good she could be doing in the world instead.

Yeah, I'm sorry but the whole selling toys and marketing herself thing goes against pretty much the entire superhero concept in my book.

All we saw was her briefly in a meeting, and even then she was distracted by matters she considered more important. Then her CEO had to get her attention back. That seems consistent with what you'd expect from a superhero with a day job. As for the actual marketing of herself as action figures... All I can say is that my attention and interest were more on seeing how well she had done at setting herself up with wealth and resources.

I have to say though that the underwear came off better than the pants when seen in action.

The underwear came off?! Gee, I thought this was for NBC, not HBO!
Yeah, you should have seen it. The use of the word "tits" was only the tip of the iceberg. :p
