Warner Bros. is considering putting WW up for a nomination for Best Picture Oscar, and Patty Jenkins up for a Best Direct nomination.
I think it would be great if after all of this time, the first modern comic book movie to win or even just get a nomination for a Best Picture Oscar was one about a woman.
I liked the film a lot - that said, Best Picture/Best Director...yeah, if you want to have another marketing point for the DVD sales, and it might get nominated with the current 'field of ten' academy mandate. Would it win either category? No.

All those "Insiders say Wonder Woman is a mess destined to flop" rumours sure did pan out... :p
Don't worry, critics and fans already have their knives sharpened and ready to use on Justice League.

With Snyder directing again, the movie is bound to be divisive.

I'm a pretty harsh critic of Snyder, but I can admit he CAN do good stuff. I personally find MoS vastly superior to BvS for example. Watchmen was well done. Just don't ask him to direct something that isn't edgy.

And honestly, considering the list of Best Picture winners includes such entertaing but hardly special flicks as Chicago, Gladiator, Shakespeare in Love, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves and, of course, quite of few of all those old musicals (which were essentially the popcorn movies of their generation), I don't think a nomination for WW is at all out of line, even if its certainly no guarantee.
Shakespeare in Love is hardly special? That's a matter of opinion, to be sure, though I agree that WW deserves nomination.

It deserves the recognition of a nomination certainly, but there's almost certainly no chance of it winning given the way Academy voting works.

@grendelsbayne's point is well made. In the long run, Academy Awards don't mean all that much. For the most part they only serve to allow actors, directors, production companies and effects houses to command higher fees for a time. Though the increased visibility certainly helps in the short term, in the long run the films themselves live or die based on their merits, regardless of what a bunch of crusty old farts vote on.

Just look back though the lists of previous 'Best Picture' winners and you'll see very few true classics. Indeed, about as many true classics that have stood the test of time were panned and/or flopped in their time as were awarded 'Best Picture'.

All this Snyder bashing feels and wanted to get rid of him kinda wrong after he quit after his little girl died. Especiall ysince its said that he insisted the WW movie to be scheduled before JL

And about this movie, I can say it was decent and fairly entertaining. Definitely the best of the DC films for me. And it entertained me more than Homecoming

Its out of line when its simply not reaching the level of a landmark in fantasy filmmaking, or film in general. Several of the films you mentioned served that purpose, and old musicals--undoubtedly, as many defined their genre.. No one can say that about Wonder Woman.

Don't forget when looking at this next link... BvS DoJ cost 101 million MORE to make. If you subtract that from its gross... then WW has already slayed that monster [film] too!

The number one grossing film of the year, however, is in NO danger of being dethroned by the Amazonian.

Although... I suspect WW lends itself more to sequel profitability than B&tB does.

Box-Office Milestone: 'Wonder Woman' Crosses $400M in North America
The femme-centric superhero film has defied all expectations since debuting in early June.

Wonder Woman muscled past the $400 million mark Tuesday at the domestic box office — an increasingly difficult feat for any film to achieve in North America.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, the summer hit is a major, and much needed, victory for Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe of superhero films.

The femme-centric superhero tentpole, starring Gal Gadot, has smashed a number of records since first hitting theaters in early June, including becoming the top-grossing live-action film of all time from a female helmer, with more than $795 million in global grosses.

More recently, Wonder Woman became the top grossing title of summer 2017 in North America and the No. 2 film of the year domestically behind another female-led movie, Disney's Beauty and the Beast ($504 million).

In North America, Wonder Woman has enjoyed the best hold of any superhero in decades, or 3.8 times its opening gross of $103.3 million, besting the first Spider-Man in 2002. Gadot stars opposite Chris Pine in the tentpole.

Regarding where it ranks on the chart of superhero films, Wonder Woman is the No. 8 comic book adaptation of all time domestically, not accounting for inflation. And if it can pass up the $403.7 million grossed by Spider-Man in 2002, it will rest at No. 7. Marvel's The Avengers is the record holder with $623.4 million, followed by The Dark Knight ($534.9 million). Otherwise, no superhero movie has scaled the $500 million threshold.

And Wonder Woman is Warner Bros.' third-biggest movie domestically behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1 million) after passing up the final Harry Potter film ($381 million), American Sniper ($350.1 million) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.4 million), again not adjusting for inflation.

According to Box Office Mojo's 8/7/17 listing, its domestic earning is $399,828,275, not "muscling" past the 400 million mark (which suggest its soared past the mark). Overall, the performance is not a surprise, as the character was provided with a great showcase/catapult in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,

You're selling this film way too short. Yes, Wonder Woman was given a good introduction in BvS, but if her standalone movie had sucked it wouldn't have cleared $100 million domestic. See the weak domestic returns for F4 and Terminator Genisys. This movie was nothing less than a bonafide success. Both critics and box office agree. End of story.

By Monday of the 10th week of its release, MoS made $ 289,000,000 domestically in inflation adjusted dollars, BvsS made 335,000,000 domestically in inflation adjusted dollars and SSQ made 328,000,000 (also adjusted). WW has made $399,828,275 domestically in the same time period.

She may not be "soaring" or "muscling" past the 400 million mark... but given it made 2.6 times as much as SSQ, 3.7 times as much as BvsS and 6.6 times as much as MoS in the 10th Monday of its release suggests it will be "soaring" past that mark sometime soon.

Oh, and MoS and SSQ had another 4 weeks and 3 days in wide release, BvsS had another 2 weeks and 3 days. I don't know how much longer WW will be in theaters, but I do know it has 1 more major market on its horizon. FORBES had an interesting article speculating on what will happen when it opens in Japan. A measly 9 million like MoS, $16-17million like BvsS or SSq, or a theater shattering $249 million like Frozen.

I'm not silly enough to expect "Frozen" sized numbers, but if it did "Malificent" sized numbers ($63 mill) then WW would be soaring past SSq's world wide gross and challenging BvS's world wide gross.

And that doesn't factor in the profitability difference between WW and BvS (you know, how WW cost 101 million LESS to make.)

Can't wait for JL this fall!

Overall, the performance is not a surprise

If anyone said the movie will break $400 million domestic prior to release they would have been laughed off, which is why nobody said that, optimistic predictions put it in the $200-250 mil range.

Wonder Woman success was not expected by many especially after the lacklustre fan reaction to previous DCEU movies. I think some people were expecting the bottom to fall out of the DCEU with Wonder Woman but instead she has lifted it to new heights :techman:

Personally my own expectations was inbetween $500-$600 million. I never thought for a second it would be at the current near $800 million mark it has grossed.

Japan loves their female heroes, so I wouldn't be surprise if WW becomes a breakout there.
