Women and Star Trek?

Itisnotlogical

Commodore
Commodore
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that when a woman has an important job in Star Trek, somehow they manage to screw it all up?
(Please note this is done jokingly. I am not sexist.)

EXHIBIT A
Yeoman Janice Rand
The Motion Picture
Killed two people with a transporter, first day on the job. No paycheck for her.

EXHIBIT B
Valeris
The Undiscovered Country
Ordered the murder of Chancellor Gorkon of the Klingon High Council and several Klingon guards, then killed the two who carried out the order. But then Spock mind melds with her and it's really kinda sexy :vulcan:

EXHIBIT C
Councillor Deanna Troi
Generations, Nemesis
Took the helm of the USS Enterprise-D and -E; crashed the damn ship on both occasions.

EXHIBIT B
Captain Kathryn Janeway
Voyager
Got lost in the Delta Quadrant for several years. Even though that's bad enough, she came back with Seven of Nine in tow :scream:

Valeris

I found that scene at the end of Star Trek VI to be profoundly disturbing. Spock forced a mind-meld on Valeris. The other time there was a forced mind-meld in Star Trek (when Tolaris melded with T'Pol in Fusion), it was called what it was: rape. Absolutely nothing sexy about it.

Anyway, back to your substantive points - T'Pol, Crusher, Yar, Uhura, Kira, Dax (both incarnations, but especially Jadzia), and B'Elanna were all supremely competent.

Looks like somebody wasn't paying attention when I said I was joking. It was horrible and I imagine extremely painful when Spock tried to force information Valeris didn't have out of her mind. Plus although I didn't really like Yar, Dax or Kira, they all did their jobs well. And I know that Troi crashed the ship on Riker's or Picard's orders depending on the movie. Cool your jets.

i just find the women on star trek to be annoying, not necessarily incompetent..... *COUGHCRUSHERCOUGH*

idk.... maybe it's just cause i'm sexist towards women... even though i am one. lol.

Just because a sexist attitude is stated as being "jokingly" expressed, doesn't mean it ain't sexist.

Once and for all I'm not sexist. If I were a captain I'd much rather have a person like Crusher doing heart surgery because someone stabbed my ass than a dude who had no idea what the hell he was doing. As well, it wasn't any of their faults about what happened. Scotty was installing new transporter buffers because Rand hadn't notified him about the transport in progress; thus Sonak and the other person dying weren't her fault. It was a very bad thing when Spock tried to force information Valeris didn't have out of her, I still have to turn the volume way down during that scene. Deanna crashed the ship because of necessity; the detached saucer section of the Enterprise D was forced to crash land on Veridian III because of the explosion caused by the nearby warp core breach, and it was necessary for her to crash the Enterprise E to disable Shinzon's Scimitar. It wasn't Janeway's fault she got lost, she was abducted by the Caretaker. I apologize if I offended anyone.

Well, I've never been a huge fan of Beverly Crusher, but she did OK when she took command of the Enterprise in Descent, didn't she?

Pray tell, with what you've now said, why did you even start such a provocative thread considering that even you are now disavowing it?

This is all silly. It was clearly a joke.

I'm a gal and I can see the funny side! I've always been amused that the only female captain who gets her own show manages to get completely lost...but hey, at least she has the balls to stop and ask for directions!

I can't believe I'm the one to point this out (being such a huge fan of her), but Jadzia made some pretty damn stupid decisions too, with her plan in "Meridian" and her insisting on investigating the strange 'anomaly' in "Children of Time". That second one was especially infuriating given its enormous consequences. :( I really wish they'd chosen a different character to make such idiotic decisions instead of tainting my favourite DS9 crew member with them.

I second this, particularly considering Dax is a Joined Trill and should be shown to possess more experience and wisdom. However, I suppose she was the most enthusiastic of the crew when it came to exploration and science, and so perhaps more likely to want to rush in and investigate. Maybe it's the Klingonophile in her: she likes charging off on adventures. However, as said, I second the argument that they should have thought of someone else to be the foolish one in this case.

Hmmm. Crusher does heart surgery after you were stabbed in the ass. You might want to get a second opinion.

I dunno. It seemed like men, women and what-the-***-is-that-thing? screwed up pretty equally across the shows and movies.

I am not a doctor, but is heart surgery really the best way to treat a patient who was stabbed in the ass?
