It's time for sharing Childbirth Horror Stories:
Daughter #1 : Water broke and went into labor 3 weeks early. Labor lasted 24 hrs. She hadn't even dropped yet, that's why it took so long. (6 lb. 10 oz.)
Daughter #2: Idiot doctor tried to slip my cervix around her King Kong shoulders and tore my cervix. (8 lb. 8oz.)
Son (last of the brood): I had to yell at the doctor to get the forceps and drag him out of there because even though I felt my pelvic bones moving apart, he wasn't coming out fast enough. Pure Agony because I was a Lamaze mama, no drugs. (9 lb. 3 oz)
See the trend? Each was bigger than the last. This is why my bladder has dropped nearly out of my body and laughing is perilous.

I've read the other day that recently there is a strong general trend to much bigger and heavier babies. One theory is that it's a side effect of the dramatically increasing environmental pollution, what with so many medically active substances in our drinking water and many other pollutants working like hormones.
You have my sympathies
*shudders* babies seem to get bigger with each subsequent pregnancy- ouuuch! Both of mine were c-section; squashing out babies that big would have probably killed me. It used to kill a lot of people- glad you made it and congratulations!
Yeah, my second was larger than my first by about 1 1/2 lbs. If I had carried #2 to term (he was three weeks early), he would have been a 10-pounder. Yikes! No thanks! I delivered both by c-section, too. I've heard that we are having bigger babies because we are healthier and because we are not held to gaining only 20 pounds during pregnancy.
Could it also have something to do with age? Nowadays women get their first baby around 30 while a generation ago it was 25 and two generations ago 18-20.
A great-great-grandmother of mine had more than 20 children of whom some 15 survived. She basically was pregnant all her adult life and died at 53 (pregnant, of course). This is what she looked like at 40 and imho she looks like 70. And utter insanity: at about 8 months pregnant she's still wearing a corset, albeit a short one that only covers the ribs.
It's no photo yet but a daguerreotype, made in 1840. Photography as we know it was invented later.

Starting menses earlier and having pregnancies later could definitely also be a factor. I believe the medical world is noting that girls globally are starting menses earlier and in most countries are also having babies later.
I cannot imagine that many pregnancies. Your poor ancestor’s experience may not have been uncommon either. Egads. When people lament the passing of the good old days I usually assume they’re male or not aware how hard life was for most people. Or both.

My husband is 6'4" so I figured my babies would be big. If memory serves (and the youngest is 31 so maybe I'm off by an ounce or two), they were 8-11, 8-12, and 8-13. The head sizes were 21, 21, and 20 1/2. So pretty much my body booted them out at almost the identical size.
Had all three natural. The first hurt like hell, the second was quick and relatively mild in comparison, and the last one? I was like "I had the other 2 with no drugs, I'll do this one." Turns out I had a bad back of which I was unaware until I was in labor. Owies.
God was I dumb. Were I older and wiser in my 20s, I'd have had meds for all three. No spinal stuff though. Part of why they were natural births was because I wouldn't allow an epidural. I'm paranoid about the spine.
Any of you with more than one child have afterpains? I knew NOTHING about that until baby 2. What an unpleasant surprise! I went to a hospital closer to home and much better for baby 3 and you better believe I had pain relief on tap for the afterpains.
That didn't help with the dreaded "stomach masher" though. Yuck.

Yep. I had afterpains with both after having c-sections. Yikes. That was not fun.
I had an epidural with the first one and a spinal block with the second. The spinal block was worse. I didn't know there was a difference until afterward. They tied my arms out for the first one, and that freaked me out, so I asked them not to with the second (he was a planned delivery), and they accommodated me.

I remember those afterpains! Pretty amazing contractions. Also, after my gigantic son was born, I was so swollen "down there" that I had to sit on a rubber donut for a couple weeks. Riding in a car was especially ouchy.
My kids are totally worth all of it, of course. And whenever a first time pregnant woman asks me about childbirth, I lie my butt off.

Stomach masher?! 
I've had laser multiple times on the chin and neck and still I have to pluck. I HATE it. It doesn't help that the hair color is so dark (my natural hair color when young was one shade off of black hair - super dark brown). So when the hair is there, they are easily seen.
The upper lip was mostly nuked by laser and what is left is unnoticeable.
But the chin and neck are the only laser failures. It did wonders for the legs and underarms and upper lip.
