Wolverine &The X-Men: I hate this show already...

..and it hasn't even aired. Why, you ask? Well, this morning I saw an ad for it. In it, there is this narration done by Prof. X (worst voice of Prof. X I've heard. But I digress). I'm parphrasing, but he says something like this: "Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, was once the leader of the X-Men, until his heart was broken by the one he loves. blah blah blah.." I then just about threw up in my mouth. There could have been any number of less contrived ways to move Cyke out of the picture and make Wolverine the centerpiece that I might have bought. He could have quit because a mission he was leading lead to the deaths of innocent civillians or a team member or two. He could have grown disillusioned with Prof. X's Dream and decided to strike out on his own or, even worse, join Magneto. But to have him hang it all up over a girl like some emo brat is just [drunken John Wayne]re-goddamn-diculous[/drunken John Wayne]. What's he going to be doing while the rest of the X-Men are out saving the world? Sitting in his bedroom with the walls covered with Joy Divison posters listening to the Smiths and composing bad poetry like " The black abyss consumes my heart while my ruby quarts lens burns with the fury of a thousand suns". It seems like Scott can't get a break either in the movies or the new show. I wish they'd just give Wolvie his own ultra violent, fanboy heavy series on FX or HBO and give us longtime X-fans a series much like the comic series X-Men: First Class. But this isn't an ideal world. So we are stuck with the umpteenth version of Wolverine And His Amazing Friends.

Maybe you should watch the show and find out why he's broken up?

The show doesn't really care about Cyclops. (I watched it on Youtube.)

Oddly, to make Wolverine the star of the series, they've given him many of the character traits of Cyclops, and given Cyclops some of the traditional traits of Wolverine, in some ways an exaggerated version of what X-Men 3 did with the characters.

Maybe it doesn't but Cyclops has a pretty good reason within the narrative why he's broken up..

He really doesn't, unless his character on the show was always notably different from all but one of his incarnations (X-Men 3). Even when Jean died in the Dark Phoenix Saga and when Professor X was thought to have been killed in a 60s or 70s issue, he left the X-Men only briefly, in the latter instance because the government ordered the until then government sponsored X-Men to break up. Cyclops falling apart like this is like Captain America or Superman losing it: it doesn't happen for more than a very little while.

I don't mean to sound like I hate the series. I don't. It's relatively poor, but probably falls somewhere between X-Men: Evolution and X-Men (the 90s animated series) in quality (I rate the latter higher; though it has some issues that stem from being an action cartoon in the early 90s, it's a generally intelligent and well thought-out production). With corrections to several serious recurring problems, it could easily be great. Like most shows today, though, it's simplistic and thoughtless in a way that childrens' cartoons weren't a decade ago.

So ? he only leaves the x-men briefly in this series within the first episode!

The bigger differences between Superman, Captain America and Cyclops is that he's a bit of whiny douchebag - so this is in keeping with that...

But when he returns, it's not as Cyclops. He's someone who clearly doesn't want to be there, and spends as much of his time complaining and being in the way as Wolverine used to.

That's a fairly recent development. Until Morrison and Whedon, Cyclops's doubts were confined essentially to his own thoughts and to infrequent conversations with persons close to him. Prior to his possession by Apocalypse (right before Morrison's run), he had been assured and centered for at least decade (including the years of the X-Men's greatest success).

Cyclops's issues have generally centered on an almost excessive focus on duty, which stems from the degree to which he must constantly restrain himself (not unlike Wolverine), lest he let go with his power and cause serious harm. He's not one who tends to extensively sulk for any other reason, and what sulking he does for the above reasons, he usually keeps to himself.

No it isn't - he ran out on his wife and child to chase his ex-girlfriend and then gets his friends not to mention the wife to his ex! That's a weapon's grade douchebag.

First, that was shortly thereafter retconned to have been caused by the Phoenix influencing his mind (not unlike why he started dating Emma, but less intentionally on the Phoenix's part). Second, that's not moping, sulking, or whining. ;)

The series is pretty good so far, though Cyclops really hasn't been focussed on much yet (it's my understanding that episode 12 has more from him).

As to it being in character, he's left the X-Men over Jean "dying" on multiple occasions, so I really don't find it inconsistent with past behaviour.

I dunno, I thought that Whedon made Cyclops, who started out as a weak leader, all kinds of kick ass.

It's not that he left, it's how he's acted since coming back. He complains a lot, argues for bad decisions, and seems kind of like a loser.

You know, as I think about it, I think I included Whedon unfairly. He wrote some great Cyclops moments, including (by quotation) "I want this thing off my lawn," "Hi, Pete. You wouldn't believe the day I'm having," and "To me, my X-Men." I would't say he started as a weak leader, though. He's only really been at all weak post-2000 and in the mid-80s. Cyclops was awesome before X-Factor and after Jim Lee came along.

Because Jean had been through a traumatic experience and he didn't want to upset her even more. And actually Maddie broke up with him because he wouldn't stop being a superhero. Jean coming back was just the excuse. And the fact that Maddie was evil as sin also had something to do with why they never got back together. And he never got back with Jean until he thought Maddie had been killed. A lot of this was done to push home the point that Scott completely eats, sleeps, and breathes this woman Jean, who he is madly in love with it. Even to the point of it being a dangerous character flaw. And yes, it a recent development. Morrison Scott and Pre-Morrison Scott are two completely different characters. One's a true hero. The other's a creative ego trip.

Nobody likes Cyclops.

Only because very few people have given him a reason to be liked. Most writers have always written him as the uptight, tightwad foil to bad boy, fan favorite Wolverine. Anybody with a basic, juvenile violence fetish and over enthusiasm with GTA knows it's easy to write Wolverine. It takes someone with a degree of skill and good character to write Cyclops and make him relatable to the average reader. Not to many of those writers out there anymore. And, sadly, not to many of those readers out there. Hence, Wolverine's popularity.:(

Is it too much to ask for Earth X Cyclops, the one who wouldn't give up even when Xavier and Jean were dead, Wolverine was Tom Anderson and his family kept asking him to leave Earth?

Well at least you get to see the show before 2009.

The trailers make this series look interesting, still though, like the new Batman series, the Batman The Animated Series and X-Men The Animated Series - both from 1992 had/have superior animation

[Another tiny voice]Me too. He was my favorite character for a long time.[/Another tiny voice]
