Wolf 359

parsonsm

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Can someone explain to me how a character in Unimatrix Zero can claim to have been assimilated at Wolf 359, and be talking about the event years later?

The cube was destroyed with all hands lost after all.

There's that three-dimensional thinking again* as that drone probably wiggled his nose just like when the Borg Queen (also claimed to be in said cube and making the same quip to Picard), along with Jeannie and Samantha and Uncle Arthur and Sabrina and Sabrina's cat...

* or translated from script-speak to real-life, it means plot holes and mistakes are glossed over with dilly technobabble

PICARD: Yes, I remember you. You were there all the time. But that ship and all the Borg on it were destroyed.
BORG QUEEN: You think in such three-dimensional terms

There's a theory that after the battle of Wolf 259 but before the Borg cube was destroyed, it opened up a transwarp conduit and sent some of the newly assimilated Starfleet officers back to the Delta Quadrant, probably by one of those Borg sphere ships.

I suppose that could explain things.
Thanks.

For what it's worth the novels also go with the idea that when a Borg cube gets destroyed a certain percentage of its drones get beamed out through funky subspace transporters which send them back to a "backup site" the Delta Quadrant for reasons I'm not exactly clear on. Admittedly, the whole thing was just a plot device in Shatner's novels to explain how Kirk survived the destruction of the Borg homeworld.

yeah, I have thought about this occasionally, remember, the Borg must have assimilated some Kobali, who had resurrection technology. I’ve always used that reasoning to explain how they could re-create the queen over and over and over again.

why would not they re-create particular drones if they were useful? It’s just a way for me to add a level of suspension of disbelief. Most of the time I just ignore little things like that.

remember, seven of 69‘s parents knew the name of the Borg before humans ever met the Borg.

It would be easy enough to assimilate a couple of ships at Wolf 359 and use them both as couriers and scouts. We have seen that just a couple of Borg on board can do this and the Enterprise was pretty late to the battles aftermath.

it bugs me too, and I've resigned myself to the possibility that the Borg must have sent a ship (either one of their own or an assimilated vessel) back to the DQ because it's, to me, the only possibility that makes any real sense, though I question the why of it.

Of course, VOY would show the Borg Queen issuing verbal orders to drones, so...

It's not only in Unimatrix Zero, it also happened in Unity. And while the explanations of shuttling off some drones aren't impossible, they don't sound particularly plausible to me. Why would the Borg do that while they're on a mission to assimilate Earth?

Finally, there's the third time they "meet" someone who was present at Wolf 359, in infinite regress , but that doesn't lead to a contradiction for me as 7 could simply be voicing a memory that was added to the Collective as the victim was assimilated (and transmitted to the other Cubes before the cube went boom).
