Several Star Trek characters offer advice for friends and strangers.

Which of these characters would you choose when you need help?

Answer came too quick for me to finish my poll. Unfortunately I have chosen the typical advice givers. Spock is not a counselor, but a trusted friend for Kirk. I can easily understand, why someone would choose him over counselors or anyone else......

I'm well aware that some of the aforementioned people are not especially popular. You can still vote for the latter option.

In the TOS era, I'd probably ask Spock or Scotty. From Scotty, an eccentric - but wise - response is expected. Probably some sort of strange metaphor as well. From Spock, cold logic.

Picard is the first person I would ask for advice in the TNG era. He's probably the most level-headed character in all of Trek. Unfortunately, Picard is a bit of an idealist and his suggestions may not always be feasible. In which case I would probably speak to Martok because he strong but fair. TNG-era spock would also be the prime candidate for a second opinion. If I can find him, that is.

Edit: Just noticed the poll. I would speak with Boothby because he has a way of teaching useful lessons to others without them even knowing it. If I'm not at Starfleet academy, however, I would definitely ask Vic.

Deanna Troi, no contest. Vic is just a hologram and why would I go to Boothby for advice? I'd probably annoy him and keep him from doing his job.
Guinan is Whoopi Goldberg saying lines written for Deanna in many cases, she's almost a Deanna offshoot.

Who says that an advice giver hast to be a professional psychologist?

Some people are very uncomfortable around psychologists.

So I think many of us prefer family members and friends.

I guess, Picard is good at giving advice. But he is a busy man..... ;)

Quark.

We have a similar thought process, think it comes with working for yourself.

I had Quark in my mind, too. But not as an advice giver. Quark went to Vic for advice. I was thinking about it and found the answer. Ezri was on the go. And Quark swooned over both Jadzia and Ezri. So Vic was the right choice for him.

In the 23rd century, McCoy.
In the 24th century, Guinan.
On Earth in either century, Boothby. I'm sure he's been around that long.

What kind of advice? Emotional?

I'd probably utilise the holodeck. I'm sure there's an adequate therapy programme to make use of. Or just have sex with a bevy of historical beauties until I feel better.

I voted for Guinan, she had a certain wisdom that only comes from having lived for centuries, and was direct and to the point most of the time. Deanna meant well, but so much of her counseling came across as psychobabble to me, having spent many years and hard-earned dollars on useless therapy myself.

Tossup between Deanna and Guinan. Deanna is a professional, and Guinan has the wisdom of serveal hundred years under her funny hat. Probably ask both of them or whoever has time.
Though I also think Data would be an awesome advice giver.
It would really depend on the nature of the problem I guess:

Career advice/serious mental problem: Deanna
Philosophical or personal: Guinan or Data.

Never got the appeal of Boothby.

And Fontaine....the only reason I'd go anywhere near his program would be to delete him.

I would seek out Garak because the advice would come with a clever and interesting anecdote that you never know is truth or lie. It would just be good fun talking with him. Whether the advice helps or not, the interaction alone would brighten my day.

I was torn between Guinan and Vic. I picked Vic, because I like the whole Vegas stuff. He helped Nog to deal with his battle neurosis.

I forgot to include Ezri. But after What you leave behind, Ezri gave up her Counselor job to follow the command track anyway. And people went rather to Vic than Ezri.

McCoy is the typical buddy. You can get advice and a glass of Saurian Brandy
