So lucky me i get to go in Thursday to get my sideways wisdom tooth extracted. I've elected to be put under sedatioon but the thing is with the exception with cutting my finger open when I was a kid, I've never had a seroius emergency medical condition, no broken bones, nothing.
Everyone says how awesome it is, just blinking and you are done.

Me? Terffified.

I just had my last freak wisdom tooth removed on Saturday! Though mine was freakish for a different reason, namely, the hooked roots that complicated an already complicated extraction. Mine was impacted. I had to remain conscious, because as a type 1 diabetic, it's more dangerous for me to be put under. To make things even more godawful, apparently high cheekbones make it difficult to get the anesthesia needle in the right places (you'd think it would make it easier), which resulted in me not being numbed for some of the hour or so of drilling, cutting the tooth in three pieces, and cutting out a chunk of my jaw bone. Though my dentist was impressed with my pain tolerance, and gave me Vicodin instead of ibuprofen for this one.

If you're going under, though, you'll be fine. Generally anesthesia is actually quite fun! The pain afterwards isn't even that bad, it's just the actual procedure that's hard, and you'll be pleasantly unconscious for that!

Tom, I was terrified the first couple times I had anesthesia, too. I'm not sure I'd call it awesome or fun, but it's always gone fine. Just once, I woke up crying, but I had read that that's fairly common, so it didn't freak me out (which is why I'm telling you).

Let's form a club, because I'm having two wisdom teeth out in a month's time. And, like you Tom Riker, this will be my first experience with any form of surgery (it's surgeons doing the dirty work, not dentists). I'm not "going under" though, I'll just be having the numbing.

My dentist decided that my left-side wisdom teeth were going to cause trouble, and so finally talked me into making an appointment at the hospital. They then decided those teeth were coming out. I was sceptical, because while they had hurt coming through they hadn't been giving me any trouble for months. However, as soon as the appointment was made, they started giving me trouble again, so the lesson is, "always listen to the dentist".

I've only had one out, about 4-5 years ago. I was awake for it, and I've got a pretty small mouth so I knew it would be pretty awkward to get out.
But yeah, with the pain killers it doesn't hurt, its just a bit uncomfortable as I always find at the Dentist sat there for 30 mins with your mouth stretched wide open.
It took him a little while to get it out at the end, actually I think he was quite new and had to go get a more experienced Dentist to do it for him, haha.
Hearing it crack out at the end made me wince a bit, but yeah it didn't hurt at all, looking bad it wasn't really anything major really.


I know some people have it worsse, but I'd say ignore all the horror stories and don't worry. Let's face it- it needs to be done, you are gonna have it done, it's not gonna kill you or give you any lasting ill-effects, so don't fret it

I had a wonderful flying hallucination and woke up crying too because the sensation of flying was so real.

TSQ, you should dress up as your tooth for Hallowe'en - that thing is horrifying! bleeech!!!

I have not been to the dentist going on 33 years.....still have all my own teeth and 2 fillings....and it was gas......woke up in hospital because the butcher......sorry dentist, had yanked out not only the teeth but a nice size bit of gum with it and could not stop the bleeding.

Gave me quite a fright to wake up to people in white coats messing about with your bloody covered mouth and face.

Your a braver man than i will ever be.....I salute you as that looks very nasty indeed

That sounds horrible. You poor thing! Not all dentists are bad, though! I really love my dentist, it was my tooth that was the problem, not him, and he and the assistants were all wonderful. I understand it must be hard to get over such a traumatic experience, but aren't you concerned about bigger problems that come from having no dental care for over 30 years?

Also, I'm not sure if the "braver man" comment was meant for Tom Riker or for me. But if it was directed at me I very much doubt I am a braver man than you.

It's pretty horrendous, huh? The sad thing is that the tooth itself was perfectly healthy, white and shiny (well, aside from all the blood). But the impaction was dangerous and it had to go.

Tom Riker, don't worry, it won't be bad. I've had over 20 surgeries, ranging from easy in-office procedures to middling procedures like this, to full-on days in hospital procedures. You'll be good. Just look at it as an opportunity to let other people take care of you for awhile. It's actually a really wonderful, reaffirming thing when you look at it like that.

Similar story here, but one tooth one visit, two teeth another visit--I only had three wisdom teeth.

Like the one pictured, at least one of mine was hooked, but with a little, very pointy hook and a shorter root. I was also lucky, none were impacted or sideways, like the x-ray, but all were quite short. Yeah, only numbed both times, but I can imagine impacted teeth need more than numbing.

Only had one wisdom tooth extracted out of the four I have, had an ok dentist (not the person, he was an idiot). He got the tooth out well enough and my mouth was really numb.

Tom Riker, good luck with the extraction. It isn't the worst experience and your mouth will feel better afterwords.

You should be fine since you'll be under sedation. The cutting and extracting is easier than what it sounds like or what the photo portrays. Pump yourself full of pain killers afterwards and enjoy those milkshakes and popsicles. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I skipped going as well because of my first dentist.

My case wasn't anywhere near as bad as yours, but for whatever reason, the gas didn't take when they were doing an extraction. They carried on regardless as I was "obviously" just having nightmare and was knocked out from the gas.

My current dentist is great, but I've scared the hell out of them once after being sedated as I didn't wake up quite as quickly after they'd done as they thought I would. I'm pretty sure I couldn't remember the next few days though. I'd say that sedation (via needle into the back of my hand) worked rather nicely

I think he'll be fine, but believe me, I wasn't exaggerating in my description of my own extraction. Every tooth and every person is different. The biggest difference, in this case, though, is that he'll be asleep, and that should be good!

I had my two bottom wisdom teeth removed a few months ago. They were both horizontally impacted and quite a pain to remove. The dentist had some trouble getting them out and had to break them up into multiple chunks. Fun times.

Actually, it really wasn't that bad. I stayed awake for the whole thing, and except for the freezing which really freaks me out for some reason, the whole thing was a breeze. I was actually getting bored with how long the operation was taking. The pain was pretty bad once the freezing wore off, but that's what pain pills are for.

You'll definitely hear a lot of horror stories about wisdom teeth if you start googling, but most of the time it's a simple procedure. You'll be fine.

My bottom wisdom teeth looked exactly like that! Impacted, sideways, everything. I had to get all four removed, plus some peripheral damage fixed (a root canal).

I was terrified.

But the whole thing really went as smoothly as it could have. I was difficult to wake up too, and after the procedure the thing that hurt the most was not my mouth (no swelling and very little bleeding!) but my shoulders from where they pinched them trying to wake me up.

And once you get it done it's so much relief, because you never have to do it again.

Best of luck! If you take care of your mouth afterwards and keep up on the ice/medication everything should go great.

After years of being told that I didn't -have- wisdom teeth, the last time I went in to the dentist they did one of those around-the-head X-rays...and found a wisdom tooth. I'm 37 now and the tooth is just sitting there like buried treasure. The dentist's conclusion was that I'd just never had an X-ray before that went far back enough to show the tooth.

They probably could have measured my heart-rate increase when they dropped the word "extraction" around me.

Given that bones (including teeth) tend to become more brittle and problematic over time, and this tooth is just sitting there not hurting anything (perversely, it -may- end up helping by pushing my teeth together and closing up some gaps in the long run), the dentist opted to leave it alone.

I hope to Hell that thing stays right where it is.
