Windows or Tulips

When I look at the Enterprise, or even Ds9, am I really seeing windows? People can actually walk past these windows and look at the wonders of space? In fact, the upper level of DS9 is nothing but a big row of windows right?

What are those windows made out of? If I were shooting a space station/ship with out shields, why not go for the windows..

Well..because..these windows are made out of some kind of material. Have they ever actually said what that is? Or is that left up to our imaginations?

Not sure it's been explicitly said, but I always assumed it was the transparent aluminum from The Voyage Home. Something stronger than current transparent objects anyway.
