Wilson Cruz quits social media

Sad to hear about Wilson Cruz leaving Twitter. It's ridiculous the toxicity online and hard not to be depressed about our society. Is it really that hard to be nice and respectful, even if you disagree with each other?

I don't know if the following applies exactly to Wilson Cruz but there seems to be some general consensus about the darker effects of social media today.

I think people enjoy getting kudos from their friends, allies, and peers when they attack those "on the other side". It's the school playground for grown ups.

In our callout culture virtue signalling era people have drawn lines and everybody plays "gotcha politics" if someone says something that can be used against them.

In my opinion the internet has demonstrated that many people express themselves loudly and publicly before they have developed good judgment and a grasp of fact.
Case in point: Roseanne's racially insensitive tweets(which cost her her tv show) and Chelsea Handler's recent ignorant tweets regarding Presidential pardons.

It is very hard to have a reasonable nuanced duscussions on most online forums. This site is one of the better places.

First they chased Brent Spiner off Twitter for quite some time and now Wilson Cruz... I honestly don't envy anyone who's currently working on Star Trek. The toxic "NOT MY STAR TREK, HOW DARE YOU" bile and conspiracy nonsense that gets thrown at them on social media is just terrible. As much as I love Twitter and other social media (on the good days), I do sometimes find myself wishing they had never been invented.

Lot of RWNJ's out there. And just plain toxic Trek fans as well.

The RWNJ's hate DISCO because it has gays on it and the black woman is the lead. The science fiction/social commentary probably went over their heads before (because "Let this be your last battlefield" is so subtle), but now the smarter ones tell the dumb ones what to get riled up about.

As for toxic Trekkies, they have always been there. DISCO has had some really bright moments. I thought the first half of S1 and S2 were both really good. And I liked the last 4-5 episodes of S4 a lot. I was thrilled to have Trek back on the air & still am.

I think SMG has done a fantastic job as the lead of fostering a good, friendly, familial vibe between the actors on set. Probably the best since TNG, and that has spilled over to SNW. She deserves a ton of credit for it.

Having said all that, S3 was, in my view, the worst season of the show and up there for worst in Trek history. It kinda felt like an "Into Darkness" vibe. All that pretzel twisting to be free from canon, and we get WOK again? WTF. At least DISCO was original.

My beef tends to be serialized generally. I like those less. But I am not toxic about it. Am I?

Sucks for Wilson, who is a great actor. I hope it does not get him down on the whole project. We all owe he and Anthony and Doug
and SMG and the others a huge debt of gratitude. I hope they keep going for 7.
