William Shatner's Wig

The type of hairpiece that Shat wore was pretty popular for actors at the time: The mission commander (the older Japanese guy with a mustache) in the Godzilla film Monster Zero (1965) wears a piece identical to Shat's. Also, the lead actors on the '70's British show wore similar hairpieces. I was always surprised to learn that Connery wore a piece in Dr. No.

The REAL question is not whether Shatner wore a piece; that's confirmed.

It's whether Jack Lord wore a piece in Hawaii Five-O.

Since The Lord never had to endure the after-series scrutiny that The Shat did, this great filmic puzzle gets (and deserves) less attention...but it's a mystery, nevertheless.

I'm willing to bet Lord wore a wig too--as well as Mike "Touch" Connors on Mannix. It was wig city in those days! In addition to the netting in the front, another big giveaway to Shatner's wig, especially in the new transfers, is the huge difference in color between the hair on top of his head and the (natural) hair on the sides and back of his head--the wig is kind of a strawberry blonde and Shatner's natural hair, at least at that point, seemed to be black. The demarcation lines are pretty visible, especially for someone like me who's made the study of Shatner's hair part of his life's work!

Since the piece, size or depth notwithstanding, appears to have had no effect on.... his.... speechmannerisms...

Who cares?

Yeah you can definitely see the netting in some of the close up stills that are out there.

The thing that cracks me up is you can always see DeForest glancing up at Shatner's hair in just about EVERY scene they're in together. I'm not sure if that was a weird tic Kelley had or if the hairpiece was just THAT distracting. :D

Actually, davejames, I've git a Cuban co-worker who is just a year older than Kirk--36--an' he's got his little briar patch on his head fadin' fast, just like me.
Makeup!!!

Those bubbles could be sweat!

I've read the Whitfiled book, and I don't see any mention of a wig. Howcome it's thinning at the front? Howcome Shatner is never seen without it now? Is it because more money is riding on it?

I heard somewhere that both Joan Collins and the actor from "Squire of Gothos" were shocked to see Shat without his rug during filming breaks.

I figure that Bill probably has had that strand-by-strand replacement surgery by now. (I can't believe I'm actually talking about this. I...must...get...a life...lol)
