Will this be in the IMDB Top 250 in a year?

Star Treks

Trek surprised many by not only being a critical and box office success, but also getting very favorable ratings from most audience members.

Of course the IMDB Top 250 is a flawed, problem-riddled list that shouldn't be take too seriously (any list where The Dark Knight can, even briefly, be called the greatest film of all time is questionable). But I don't think it should be totally ignored. It does reflect, to a large extend, those films which moviegoers really do love, and even if it's flawed, a lot of people use it as a reference.

Curently, Star Trek sits at #71 (between Pan's Labyrinth and Raging Bull). I don't know where it topped out, but the best I saw it at was #58. But as most people who follow the IMDB know, hit movies tend to lose a bit of their ratings luster once they have fallen off the mainstream radar.

My question is, do you think Trek will still be in the IMDB 250 in a year? What general area do you see it settling into (70s? 150s? not on the list at all?). I find it really gratifying that people like this movie. But how much do they really like it?

I can see it going either way... it might take two years for Trek's IMDb rating to fall below 8.0... but I can imagine it being in the 200-250 range within a couple months. That tends to be how new, popular movies go in my casual observation. The top 250 is indeed 'flawed' in that is reflects current sentiment more than any measure of "greatness." I have used it as a guide to my movie watching though. I've seen 99 of the top 100 (excluding The Wrestler, in netflix queue) and 241 of the whole list. Nearly every film on it is perfectly watchable.

I'm surprised it has made it into the top 250 at all. It's placement would imply that it is by far the best Star Trek movie, since none of the others are on the list. That is debatable even here among fans, and I'm sure the excitement among the general public will die down soon.

Although I really like this movie (it's not often I see a movie in the theater twice, if that says anything ;)), I'm not sure I would place it even among the best sci-fi. Right now it ranks above Back to the Future, and that is a much better time travel story. It also ranks above 2001: A Space Odyssey, which seems very out of place since that is one of the most influencial sci-fi films of all time. These examples are of other movies in the genre. When you broaden the ranking to all movies ever made, this particular Star Trek incarnation should not hold up.

Personally, I do not consider IMDB's ratings a definitive source. I like the idea of ranking movies, but it is so subjective there is no way to come up with a truly "accurate" measurement of the best movies.

Time will tell, it always does, but we'll see where this ends up on the 250 list after a while. To have it rated above 2001: A Space Odyssey is well -- again we'll see if it holds up. I am not good at making predictions, especially about the future, but I think it will fall from its current height.

True. That would require a sort of authority on the quality of films. And there is no ultimate authority on that, as with all art, it's subjective. Even films like The Godfather or Citizen Kane have their detractors. So in the end, what the IMDB Top 250 is about is the consensus of the average moviegoer. And it reflects well the likes of people I know for example.

These perceptions change with time. I don't think that The Empire Strikes Back was always seen as superior to the original Star Wars, for example. LOTR, especially Return of the King used to be higher on that list. American Beauty was #1 for several weeks at least in 2000, now it's in the Top 30 or somewhere... which for a relatively new film in abojt a hundred years of film history is very good. Star Trek's been holding on to a Top 100 rank now for two weeks, which makes me believe it might actually stay in the 200s for years to come. Look at Sin City: Who even remembers that movie? It's still way up on that list.

That depends on how many IMDB profiles Captain Robert April and Dayton3 will make to vote it with the lowest score possible.

I just checked again, and already "Star Trek" has already fallen to #90. This places it just below "2001: A Space Odyssey", which is something I feel better about. It's only been about 3 weeks since the first post in this thread about this, and the movie is still in theaters. Considering how fast it is falling, it wouldn't surprise me if the rank lowered considerably more before it stabilizes somewhere.
