Trek surprised many by not only being a critical and box office success, but also getting very favorable ratings from most audience members.
Of course the IMDB Top 250 is a flawed, problem-riddled list that shouldn't be take too seriously (any list where The Dark Knight can, even briefly, be called the greatest film of all time is questionable). But I don't think it should be totally ignored. It does reflect, to a large extend, those films which moviegoers really do love, and even if it's flawed, a lot of people use it as a reference.
Curently, Star Trek sits at #71 (between Pan's Labyrinth and Raging Bull). I don't know where it topped out, but the best I saw it at was #58. But as most people who follow the IMDB know, hit movies tend to lose a bit of their ratings luster once they have fallen off the mainstream radar.
My question is, do you think Trek will still be in the IMDB 250 in a year? What general area do you see it settling into (70s? 150s? not on the list at all?). I find it really gratifying that people like this movie. But how much do they really like it?

), I'm not sure I would place it even among the best sci-fi. Right now it ranks above Back to the Future, and that is a much better time travel story. It also ranks above 2001: A Space Odyssey, which seems very out of place since that is one of the most influencial sci-fi films of all time. These examples are of other movies in the genre. When you broaden the ranking to all movies ever made, this particular Star Trek incarnation should not hold up.
