Will they say "Phase Cannons" or "Phasers" in this film?

Do you think they will use the more 'modern sounding' Enterprise technical terms such as "Phase Cannons" and "Transmats" and "Sheild Hamronic Frequencies" or will they use all the old jargon such as 'dials' thrusts etc in the new film?

I feel we may get as much technobabble as in VOY and ENT even though this is meant to be in the swastbuckling Kirk (non-technobabble) era.

You lump Voyager and Enterprise in the same category where technobabble is concerned? Dude, did you even watch these shows?

Thank God I don't have the same feeling.

I would bet that we will hear almost no technobabble in this movie.
The days of, "Forward shields down to 24%. Reroute aux power to the forward shields. Aft phasers down to 10%. Divert power from the tractor beams and compensate," are hopefully over.

To be fair though, that example above is not really tecnobabble and is easily understood by 99% of an audience in that power is being diverted from one area of the ship to another so they are better protected.

The technobabble most people object to is when a character such as Chakotay who has already admitted to finding much science difficult suddenly comes up with plot solutions which rely on statements such as:

"If we connect the biometric interfdaces and subspace relay emitters into the deflector dish then we can compensate for the retondo forces and neutralise the gravimetric stresses allowing us to break free" - COMPLETE NONSENSE! that makes the audicene go "pardon?"

Likely hear the basic techno stuff like aux power to the shields or engines but I doubt we will hear about rerouting the flux capacitor throught the deflector array to create a sonic resonance burst of 5.74 Mhz ect

As for the Phasers/lasers argument, I know the canon people will argue laser because of the Cage, but its more likely to be Phasers and Photon torpedos as they are more recognisable as Star Trek

I'm all for *some* technobabble to set the scene for the future - power to the shields and even the odd bit of power rerouting. But so far as magnaton scans, verteron particles and inverse tachyon pulses go? I think Abrams knows to stay clear of that claptrap.

They won't use lasers. "Laser" is not a trademark and therefore has no merchandising value.

The other thing about lasers which occurs to me is that, in 1964 and '65, lasers were new and high-tech and "science-y" to the general public. Now, though, everyone's got lasers in the home, the office, the supermarket checkout line and on their keyrings; lasers have become commonplace and, therefore, boring. Lasers just don't have the cool factor any more, even if we "know" that's what we "should" see.

They'll be phasers.

Technobabble is OK for the pocket-protector crowd :borg:, but if it gets in the way of the action... it has to go, IMHO. :vulcan: Therefore I hope they use it in moderation, as stated above.
It's not the "techno" that bothers me, it's the "babble" part. :guffaw:
