Will there ever be a cannon release post-Dominion War?

First, "canon" is official storyline & "cannon" is a big weapon.

Second, there's a post-finale series of novels that have been comin' out for about a decade now. Not official, but as close as ya can get. And they're awesome. Start with Avatar, Books One & Two by S.D. Perry & go from there.

Third, none of the novels are canon, and probably never will be, because they're novels, not tv shows or movies.

Well, the final two seasons of VOY and Nemesis are set after the Dominion War. :p

Seriously though, I would suggest the novels. I myself need to get caught up on them. In fact, I've only read one, but it was awesome.

I just finished readin' the first Typhon Pact book, which is all about Bashir & Ezri, but set quite awhile after Soul Key...I really hope there's a book or two that fills in the gap.

Some of the novels are bad, some are mediocre and others are quite excellent. It's the same way as any other form of entertainment.

oh, so the novels are worth reading?

whenever i've seen them mentioned here they're always just given a 'meh' treatment

I have yet to see a 'meh' reaction to the DS9 Relaunch (except for the novel about Rugal - I had a 'meh' reaction to that one). in the online community. Yeah, cast a wider net into Trek novels, and you'll come up with some gawd awful stories. If ya track back far enough, you'll even find the standard "crew shows up, causes/discovers imminent danger, tries to fix/prevent danger, discovers possible pre-warp civilization, and warps away smilin' after 11th hour rescue."

Nope, DS9 is a dead IP. There will never be any canon post-Dominion War release. And the novels certainly are not canon.

Make your own personal canon. Read some of the novels. If you like them, include them in your personal canon. If not, don't. If you don't like an episode that's considered "canon", remove it from your personal canon. It's not like there are canon police who are going to knock down your door and lock you away for what you like. Too much emphasis is place on what's "official" and what's not. Who cares?

That said, you're probably never going to see anything more from DS9 out of CBS or Paramount.

Tie in novels tend to get a "meh" treatment regardless. For good reason, most of the time.

The DS9 novels were good up until Unity. After that, don't bother.

oh, ok.

are there any that focus on the Dominion? i loved watching the Dominion scenes in the show. to be honest, i much preferred those scenes to any from the Federation scenes. i really don't like watching the prophets or anything to do with bajor mysticism.

which ones focus on the Dominion?

Section 31: Abyss is set on a Jem'Hedar cloning facility, and Worlds of DS9 #3: Ferenginar and the Dominion is exactly what you're looking for.

I've read most of the DS9 relaunch, and the opening books -- Avatar and Abyss -- are excellent. I can't speak for the books set after Warpath, though.

The DS9 relaunch starts off amazing and just dies. It's painful and disgusting. It's one of the most disappointing things ever because that start was amazing.

The entire TrekLit universe is an absolute fanwank joke now. They need to just fire everyone and start over and forget all the damage they've done.

OOOO!! I *loved* Warpath!! Fearful Symmetry and the Soul Key and are good now that they can be read together and there isn't a huge gap.

Actually the reason they're not canon has nothing to do with the medium. It's because they haven't been officially proclaimed canon. You can generally have a novel or comic continuation of a TV show that is canon (e.g. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 8 and upcoming season 9 comic series, which is canon for the simple reason that Joss Whedon says it is [and because he's heavily involved in writing it), but it's not the case with Star Trek.

Gene Roddenberry is dead, so is his widow. Who should decide what's canon in Star Trek & what isn't? Rick Berman, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, Ira Steven Behr, Brannon Braga, or maybe J.J. Abrahms? Paramount or maybe just CBS?

Too many cooks in that kitchen, that's for sure...

Also, ya have too many of the early novels that contradict each other to try to canonize 'em. Goin' by the post-Star Trek VI novels, ya would think that Kirk took the E-A out for another five year mission before he returned it to Starfleet.

I say there's no need to worry about what's canon & what isn't, anyway, so long as its a good story told well...and who can disagree with that?

Voyager, Enteprise, TNG movies and Abrams' movie are all considered canon, so obviously someone does have the power to determine what is canon and what isn't.

Or maybe people are just assuming what is canon and what isn't?

On the other hand, did Roddenberry really have the power to declare what is or isn't canon? Didn't he pretty much de-canonize The Final Frontier, but nobody paid any attention?
