Will there be a Star Trek IV?

I'm pretty sure they'd try to sanitize the franchise's history, much like they seem to self-regulate their own public image.
Meaning what exactly?
So spending $200 million on Star Trek somehow means Paramount is treating it badly?
Better promotional work? Beyond has had one of the best marketing campaigns I've seen for any film in years.
Which Disney network shows Doctor Who?
Better merch, maybe. At this point it seems my hopes for plushies of Jaylah and Krall are doomed.
All of those who stated that if Star Trek Beyond is profitable are obviously correct. It is almost a certainty that STB will eventually turn a profit somewhere during its revenue stream. Given the bonus of relatively high home video sales and merchandizing of a franchise like Star Trek compared to other movies it would be hard to imagine this movie taking a loss. However, the more costs that can be recouped in theatrical release, the better. Only 25-40% of a films overall revenue stream would be from actual box office receipts so the higher the gate the greater the overall profit. Additionally you would expect a more popular film at the theater to also have proportionally higher secondary and ancillary revenue.
But you also need to take into account this era's obsession with tentpole franchises. Independence Day Resurgence, War for the Planet of the Apes, Ghostbusters, the Mummy, etc. Studios are killing themselves to create potential franchises out of intellectual properties they already control. Star Trek is a proven franchise. A disappointing box office run might lead to changes in direction or budget limits but it's hard to believe that Paramount would just shelve the franchise to try and create something new and original from scratch and hope it takes off and creates another vehicle for multiple sequels.
Don't put too much stock in "plans underway for a sequel" news. That is standard operating procedure these days for almost all tentpole productions. Terminator, Pacific Rim, ID:R, Green Lantern, Fantastic Four, Jack Ryan, etc, have sequel machinery in the works even before it is known if a movie will be successful or not so they can turn around a sequel faster (striking when the iron is still hot). Usually they are just cancelled after the fact if studios choose not to proceed.

There is nothing making me doubt that Star Trek Beyond will get a sequel. Paramount and their financing partners understand this is a property with a box office top end. I doubt they would've spent $200 million dollars if they didn't have faith that they would recoup their investment and make a healthy profit.
I agree. I was just pointing out that script writing for a sequel often starts before the release date for properties that are expected to yield multiple releases. This is to shorten the turnaround time bringing the next movie to the theaters. Directors can be attached as well as actors, etc. I'm sure Paramount plans another entry in the franchise. It would have to fall significantly below expectations for them to shelve the franchise (put it on hiatus).
Well it's official. Star Trek XIV is happening. They announced it Today (7-18-16).
