Well tough shit for "some people". "Some people" didn't make the movie. The filmmakers did. And the filmmakers should be the ONLY ones who decide whether an alternate cut is made available. IF such an alternative is available, then great. But "some people" are not more qualified than the filmmakers themselves to decide what was important to a film. I have no problem with filmmakers making the option available if they wish--I have a problem with "some people" thinking it is their "right" to have an alternate cut. "Some people" are not OWED anything by the filmmakers beyond what the filmmakers choose to make available. The sooner "some people" learn that, the better.

Interesting that people are willing to give J.J. Abrams so much latitude on this, but scream bloody murder at the Star Wars Special Editions.

I'm not one of the screamers. I don't always agree with the choices filmmakers make ("Hans shoots first!" ) but I will defend their rights to do what they wish with their creations. It is always my preference that an original theatrical cut be available (as I would very much like in the case of Amadeus and JFK--the latter would be very helpful for my research interests) but I also know that I am owed nothing from the creators of any work of art--popular or fine. I am free to decide how to respond to what they make available--that is the extent of my "rights" in the matter. Too many cases exist where creators are not able to maintain their vision as they see fit for me to begrudge those instances where they do have that ability, even if their ultimate choices disappoint me.

I tend to like it if a DVD comes with both a theatrical cut and an extended cut. That way, my curiosity is satisfied but I still have the abreviated version. Either might be arguably better.

I'm all for an extended cut. If there are deleted scenes, I'd prefer them to be back in the film.

Why? Editing exists for a purpose. I much prefer a coherent narrative over a "everything but the kitchen sink" "cut" just so it can be longer. Sometimes extra material can enhance a film (Kingdom of Heaven profited greatly from the extensive extra material) and sometimes it can simply bog the film down (Amadeus is still alright in its lengthier cut but the theatrical cut was far tauter and was better for it). And after viewing the 'deleted scenes' for many films (thanks to DVD), I've found that most of them were best left on the cutting room floor.

I'm with that. I like both versions of the Lord of the Rings movies.

A lot of times removed scenes from movies were never completed- no sound or incomplete SFX work.
I always enjoyed the deleted scenes on the DVD special features- they do not need to be integrated into ths film.
IMO one of the best 'Directors Cut' version was "Dark City" - just a few seconds here, a longer moment there, but it made the film more interesting and the story deeper.

Exactly! I hope they never invent those "extended edition" movies. it would be chaos! 700 different cuts for every movie.

An extended cut is something the director should choose to do.

When Peter Jackson was making "The Lord of the Rings", he deliberately filmed stuff that could be added to the DVD medium, since the format offered different viewing experiences than a movie theatre.

I seem to recall JJ saying the ST movie may have additional scenes when coming to DVD.
