Will the Patrick Stewart and new shows hurt "Discovery?"

*sigh*

Burnham was just Tom Paris without parents when you think about it. And that ship design was just atrocious.

And Tom Paris was just Nick Locarno with parents. Granted Nick probably had parents too but we never saw them onscreen and so they are therefore not canon.

People can handle multiple Marvel movies and shows all set in the same universe without affecting the success of each other, they can handle a few Trek shows set at different points in the same universe.
Star Trek doesn't have the broad appeal of Marvel. Although I really really hope for the best, I suspect with a potential 5 series and 2 movies on the way, Star Trek is about to drown in itself.

It'll be a blaze of glory, at least.

Yeah, but All Access is just feeding off the existing fanbase, so viewer fatigue is much less of a concern. It's like we're the Onlies and don't need any Grups.

I have this image of CBS All Access slowly turning itself into a very, very expensive Patreon/GoFundMe.

(spoiler) TPTB kill her off in the season two opener

Before 2008 Marvel didn't have appeal of Marvel. They broke through (thanks in HUUGE part to RDJ) and have been raking in all the spare cash people have on hand. But for all the attempts that have tried to duplicate the success of MCU, no one is even close to where Marvel was in 2012 (when first Avengers came out). DC tried and looks like a failure, Dark Universe is DOA, MonsterVerse is still too early to call. My point is that STFU (Star Trek Full Universe) CAN work with multiple parallel series and movies, but the chances are against it.

Neither did Marvel until they managed to make it work.

Instead of looking at Marvel Trek might be best served to hope for the Arrowverse which might be more realisitc. Or the Netflix Marvel shows. If we do look at Marvel lets not forget that same universe also basically erased the "Hulk" movie with Ed Norton in it to a point where I think many people often forget about it. If the Picard show is great and "Discovery" isn't it could easily be surpassed and forgotten by all the following shows even though it was actually the first one to get the whole thing started.

TNG couldn't even hint at gayness. I forget the episode name, but the one where Riker falls in love with one of an androgynous species. Frakes wanted the character to be played by a male actor but was overruled so the androgynous species was all female and we basically had him falling in love with a woman - nothing unusual there.

Also there was 'Blood and Fire' which had an allegory to HIV/AIDS and a gay couple, but it was vetoed and even rewritten after David Gerrold left the show.

At least DS9 got away with hinting about it on at least a half dozen different occasions.
