Will season 7 be Smith's last?

I'd love to see Smith match Baker's 7 years.
Hear, hear! There's no point in changing just because you can. Actually, I think 5 would be a good number. It may depend on the dynamic of the show, though.

I'd still like to see a cross over with Paul McGann.

This is the ONLY cross over that makes sense to me. We have no idea how long McGann's Doctor existed. So there's no lame aging excuse needed.
I concur in the fullest. Also, it would potentially be a way of exploring the Time War and drawing a line under it at the same time. A McGann regeneration seems unlikely, though, unkless Ecleston changes his mind - and that would bring pressure to add in Tennant too.

It also would be a great reward for him after making the 2-hour tv Doctor into such a great (and best) audio fiction Doctor. Really, if you haven't listened to them they are so good.
If he did return, a few throwaway lines to acknowledge some of what he's been up to might be nice.

Agreed, I'd love to see him stay as long as Tom Baker. I think it would be cool to see how this Doctor's style and personality evolves over several years, and to see how an older Matt Smith might play the role.

Unfortunately I have a feeling, once his "best mate" Karen is gone, Matt's heart just won't be in it as strongly anymore...

I think Smith will stay with the show at least to see it through the 50th anniversary. He's stated more or less this intent before. Tennant still jokes about how people were asking when he was going to leave as soon as he was signed to the part, so I wouldn't expect any different with Smith. Yes, he's going to Hollywood to look for roles. So what? Movies can be shot in 3 weeks. It's not as if he was signed to replace Laurence Fishburne on CSI or anything. In fact Smith managed to sneak 2 movies in after he was announced as the Doctor - that thing he did with Eva Green that I don't think has been released yet, and the Christopher Isherwood movie. Same goes for Karen Gillan doing the Shrimpton movie (which I think was shot last month):movie roles and phrases like "when I'm done Doctor Who" which could refer to just the current season don't really mean a lot.

i'm going to change my sig.

Ecclestone's never coming back to Doctor Who. Deal with it.

Never say never again, to quote the film title the second time Connery came back to play the character he loathed...

And I will state again that Alan Wilder got back on stage with Depeche Mode for one song recently. That was despite all the drama that revolved around his departure. So I firmly believe that Christopher Ecclestone's return isn't unlikely even if it is just for one episode. Oh and if he's not working at the time, lol

This wouldn't bother me a bit - Smith's Doctor is the least interesting character in the current run of the show.

Maybe they can go to the parallel universe and snatch Ten's clone back as Twelve. Please. ;)

Smith's Doctor has grown on me. I'll be happy to watch him as long as he's interested in staying in the role.

3 years is good. So is 4 because he is still a young actor and there will be something waiting for him after he finishes. He won't miss his chance if he stays 4 years.
If series 7 was split maybe we might see a midseason regeneration.
Still at this time he is young and fresh and hip as the Doctor to me. Seems too soon to talk about it.

Yeah, I'd like 4 years to be the standard. You need time to get to know the Doctor. Too short a time and the regen loses some of the impact. I think Eccelston got away with it because he was our first Doctor in fifteen years and we got attached to him quickly. Plus Chris is just that good.

Too long a time, and you get whiny fans of that Doctor unable to move on.

I would assume mainstream in this case assumes the inherent limitations of being an unapologetic sci-fi show. I see two Doctor Who billboards every day on my way to work here in LA and most of my coworkers have seen at least one episode. Most people understand Doctor Who in much the way they understand Star Trek, a half-formed concept in the back of their mind they never actively think about but can draw upon when asked.

This is worth highlighting. That's pretty damn cool, actually. Certainly a change from back when you might see an add buried away in TV Guide or in a fanzine.

Whereabouts are the billboards? I don't suppose you're lucky enough to have a giant image of Karen Gillan covering the side of a building on Sunset Blvd. or anything...

Surely there'd be too many car crashes!

I've seen two on Venice and one on La Cienega, pretty sure I've seen a few others around too. Most of the them have been with pretty much just the title with Smith holding the sonic. One was a closeup and a slogan of some kind but that was a while ago.
