Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

Colour me naive or paranoid but I still don’t think it’s Ziggy. They’ve got nothing but a theory and summarily switched her off. There’s no corroborating evidence at all as yet.

In the comic book Transmetropolitan, time travel into the future is impossible.

Not because the technology is beyond them, but because (and I quote) "Every time someone comes back, they are tripping balls on heroin, wearing nothing but a butplug and the words "Stay Out" are tattooed onto their forehead".

Never trust future people.

Since I have nowhere else to put this, as an aviation geek I can't let pass that they pretty accurately recreated the 747-200 that was used in the episode. Hollywood has such a set available and I think they used it, albeit heavily made up to be a fictional airline.

Mark

there's an aviation thread in Sci-Tech that might be of interest to you.

just finished watching the ep.

looks like they also used the 727 cockpit from the site you linked.

And didn't Al do it in the Pilot to help Sam fly the experimental jet?
I remember Al getting Sam to copy his movements, but I don't recall anything other than that. But it's been a while since I watched Genesis.

you’re correct. Sam just followed where Al pointed.

Al also pointed out that going to Mach 2 (or 3) was the easy bit, but Sam wasn’t going to be able to land the aircraft even with his help.

I looked up the summary to see how that turned out, and Sam ejected before the craft blew up. But it suggested an interesting idea for an episode -- what if the only way out of a deadly situation was for Ben to change history and leap out in time for the real person to return and use their own skill to survive? Not sure how that would play out, but it's an interesting thought.

Although I guess they did something similar in the episode where Sam leaped into a pregnant woman and then leaped out just before she gave birth.

So dos that put QL in the same world as the Airport movies?

There are a number of fictional airlines that get used in multiple productions/universes because the signage and stock footage are already there and it's simpler to reuse them. I think LOST's Oceanic Airlines is one of them. It's done with other products too, like The X-Files's Morley cigarettes, IIRC.

Yawn.

Well shoot. THAT was a thing.

They gave us an ending that could’ve served as a season OR series finale, didn’t they?

But here I thought that “we need each other “ meant that Ian or Addison would’ve lePt in to be the one who shot Martinez. What we got was significantly more timey-wimey but I guess it works.

Leaping through previous leaps was well handled. I guess they shot those scenes during production of those episodes, meaning it was planned out far enough ahead.

Where do we go from here? Who appeared in the accelerator? Why did Addison have such a curious expression when she saw who it was? What happened to Martinez/Magic and Ben/
Ben when they disappeared into the 2018 accelerator? All good questions! How many will be answered..?

"Damn! You really are the Terminator."

That made me laugh out loud! It's also something Sam and Al would say.

How will it all be answered? Maybe Ben does return home, but subsequently Leaps out again because of Season 2 Mystery Box. Or he returns, but for some reason remembers everything differently from everyone else. It would be ultra cool to have Sam Beckett himself emerge from the Acclerator, followed by Ben.

Wow. Magic got the Quantum Bump twice in one lifetime. Clearly, he has an important role to play in history.

TIME RAM!!! Or Flashdance! Hey! We're back in the 80's! Yay!!!

A pretty good finale, though it had parts that fall apart if you think about them. Why did Ian just realizing their various selves had to do it "together" somehow magically cause them to synchronize? How did the various past leapees' bodies teleport to where Ben and Martinez were fighting? When Ben and Martinez leaped while already inside Past Ben and Magic, did Past Ben and Magic leap too?

Still, plot holes aside, it was a nice payoff to the season arc and a nice way to get everyone involved in the story and the solution. Having Ben helped by his past leap experiences, and by a friend he made along the way, was also a nice touch, though I didn't even remember the woman who showed up to shoot Martinez. (I thought for a moment that it was going to be Addison who'd leaped to save Ben, setting up a season 2 status quo where they leaped together or something.)

I'm not comfortable with the idea of Ben "fixing" their first date by kissing Addison at a time when she didn't yet have feelings for him. That seems presumptuous and is disquieting from a consent standpoint.

Interestingly ambiguous ending. I wonder if they shot a scene of Ben arriving home, which they would've used if the show had been cancelled, but left out once they got renewed. Now that there will be a season 2, I wonder how they'll play it. They'll probably pick up from that last moment and have something go wrong and whisk Ben away again.

Is anyone else getting those commercials I see on NBC.com for the "green noise" app as a sleep aid? I find it utterly bizarre that there are commercials for static.

the good, leap "flachbacks" to earlier episodes and help by someone who Ben helped along the way.

everything futur parts = the less said, the better.

the whole "Martinez" storyline = meh some political/cult, but at least it wasn't just "evil" leapers.

Ben will not arrive (normal) whenever present day is, it will be...
  • Baby Ben
  • Grandpa Ben
  • Sam Beckett
  • Alternate Universe Ben
  • Allison from 2018 that was supposed to leap in the first place with Ben being somewhere else
  • whomever...
