Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

Something I've been wondering about. Earlier in the season when Magic was talking about his experience when Sam leaped into him, he talks about feeling another presence trying to "step in" so to speak which he apparently consented to. Which at the time, it was pointed out that in the original show there were those Sam leaped into who weren't likely to have consented to have him occupy their bodies, like Lee Harvey Oswald. But, in this episode we have Martinez leap into Magic. Did Magic also consent to becoming Martinez's host? Even if we consider the various people throughout the shows can sense the benevolent intent of Sam or Ben, which motivates them to consent to the leap, Martinez almost certainly wouldn't have had that. Does Martinez just go ahead and forcefully leap into his hosts? Is the "consent" just some rationalization Magic came up with after his experience with Sam? Or is this just another of the many inconsistencies with leaping that pop up on both shows?

Maybe it's not that a leaper needs consent to enter, so much that Sam wasn't the type to force his way in, while Martinez was.

As for why someone like Oswald or others would have granted consent... well, for one thing, they didn't really consciously know what they were being asked to do, but just felt a benevolent presence inviting them to step back for a while. I imagine that a lot of people in stressful situations, like the kind that Sam or Ben usually leap into, would find that an inviting offer.

And yes, it's an inconsistency, but it's a change for the better, since we have more sensitivity about bodily consent today, and the leaping process raises some uncomfortable questions without it.

Somehow I feel that a leapee is being "asked" to be occupied for a spell by some cosmic force: the oft-referenced God, or Time, or Fate, or whatever. This force seeks out the right person who'll be the best vessel for the leaper to partner with. If they say no on whatever conscious or unconscious level, then the target gets neuralized (or whatever) and we move on. I'm not sure how this equates with the person that old Ian leaps into, though, as that was quite deliberately targeted.

Martinez's dialogue puts "The Machine" and "The Accelerator" in place of what Sam and Al might have called Time, Fate, or God. Is it The Accelerator that is nudging people?

Maybe the Accelerator merges with advanced AI gains sentience and because of the quantum existence it reverberates back to the inception of it and the actual 'guiding force/god' from the original series is actually something mankind ultimately created and is now guiding them and tweaking history.

I sometimes figured it was Ziggy, but the new Ziggy is not a sentient AI like the original.

But I've asked this question before -- didn't the finale establish that it wasn't "God or Fate or Time or Whatever" directing Sam's leaps, but Sam's own subconscious? Wasn't it that he'd really been guiding himself the whole time?

I think Sam was given the ability to CHOOSE to leap or not. Where he was going was left up to something. How would Sam know where/when he had to go and who had to be helped?

I was really hoping for Ziggy to be given a voice by the end of the episode, but no such luck.

I'm not sure that "Mirror Image" spells anything out explicitly, you might as well conclude that Donald Bellisario is personally sending Dr. Sam "Becket" through time.

But... either a nigh-omniscient Don Bellisario's dad-like Pennsylvania bartender named Albert was leaping Sam around (semi-voluntarily), or Sam is in charge of all of it on some level and the (leaper? angel? alien?) bartender was just trying to tell him as much, or a third thing beyond our comprehension. To Al Calavicci, it even smacked of Sam losing his grasp on reality. In my view, a natural cosmic Force or even a Manufactured Deity is neither confirmed nor ruled out.

"Judgement Day" seemed like it was leaning toward a mystical force. Maybe literally The Force from Star Wars... Is Ian a Jedi?

I think Sam leaped into people that God felt was the best person for Sam to pretend to be in order to change what needed to be changed. The consent thing is more of a issue with his new idea of jumping into other peoples bodies but Sam never did that. He just had their image. The real person was back in the waiting room.

Hiding my reply as potential spoilers because I have a question about the article and not everyone will read it if they don't want advance info. Apologies in advance for being cautious.
This is what the article says about Gadiot
"Gadiot, meanwhile, will portray U.S. Army Officer Tom Westfall, who is former special forces and will oversee the Quantum Leap project. "

So.... Where's Magic????? Will the Westfall character be someone Magic reports to further up the food chain?

It's confirmed that Magic is still a regular in season 2: https://www.looper.com/1229902/erni...-williams-in-quantum-leap-season-2-exclusive/

So I'm guessing he gets a new boss installed above him after last season's events.

Incidentally, the article link doesn't work anymore.

Wait a minute. Wasn't that the name of the kid from the St. Elsewhere finale?

That was spelled Tommy Westphall but, yeah, close to identical. That has to be a deliberate reference to realities and a producers' and writers' in-joke.

I've officially given up on this series. I'm not even going to bother to finish season one. I got 3/4ths through and finally just read the Wikipedia entries for the rest. Meh. Somebody @ me a year from now if Sam ever shows up.
