Will Quintos NuSpock Be Remembered LIke Nimoys Spock?

Most people would vote for Connery as best Bond in a poll but they'd be wrong. :p ;) Roger Moore is my Bond. All the actors who've played Bond might show in the results but Connery would still win.
It may change with time, though.

I appreciate Quinto taking on the role but, unless something incredible occurs, like I have a stroke and lose my memories, Nimoy is my Spock.

People remember all of the Bond actors, even Lazenby, so I don't see why not.
Good point. And while people have been iffy about the various Bonds that followed Connery, Daniel Craig seems to be regarded as being right up there, so successor doesn't always mean lesser.

Agreed. To add to your point as well, while we all have our favorite Bonds, comparing them usually never means outright replacing or being better known as Connery, because it's just silly. It's usually understood that while there are several Bonds, each one fills in a specific need for their time and movie. Going back to Craig, one of the main reasons why he's regarded as being right up there is because he's the Bond for the 21st century and embodies it so. That's hard enough to pull already, and doesn't need any comparisons to Connery to justify it. I feel that's why Nimoy and Quinto will remain separate but together, why (as you put it) successor doesn't mean lesser, and also why I feel that Nimoy gave Quinto his blessing and tutelage to begin with.

There are differences though when comparing to Bond. The first being that Spock was created for TV and Nimoy was the first to play him. Bond was a character in a series of books and Connery came along later and portrayed him. Second Nimoy played Spock much longer than Connery played Bond. Third Nimoy played Spock in 80 45 minute episodes and 7 movies over 5 decades. Quinto wont come close to that amount of time which is why he will never be able to embody the character
like Nimoy did.

It's generational. That's it. If Trek carries on for another 50 years, and if Quinto stayed in that role for the next 20 years, why on Earth would a 10 year old child today grow up believing Nimoy was the 'real' Spock? Because anything else was sacrilege? They're going to go with their own frame of reference, not ours. My daughter barely knows who Elvis and Michael Jackson are, and have never heard of Phil Collins or Jim Morrison. And thats because they're growing up in a different time. I surmise that the real answer to the question is how long Spock is an essential Trek character and how long Quinto stays with the role, which I believe is about another movie or two. As for me, Nimoy will always be Spock.

I'm actually pretty relieved that your daughter doesn't know Phil Collins. Protect her ears! ;)

We can teach her about Elvis, Jackson, or Morrison, though.

I was born after Connery was Bond and watched his movies much later. I think of Connery as the definitive film Bond even much better than Craigs version. Just because a moive, song etc is old doesn't mean young people wont explore them and come to love them as much as things that are being made in their own time. I love the universal monster moves of the 1930s and many from the 1920s all which were made decades before I was born.

Second Nimoy played Spock much longer than Connery played Bond. Third Nimoy played Spock in 80 45 minute episodes and 7 movies over 5 decades. Quinto wont come close to that amount of time which is why he will never be able to embody the character like Nimoy did.

I don't think volume will have anything to do with whether Quinto will be remembered or not for having portrayed Spock. It will come down to impact he has on the role and how pop culture embraces it.

I think he will be remembered for playing a variety of roles including Spock. I just don't think his Spock will become the icon that Nimoys did. Remember TOS broke new ground with Spock and storytelling. NuTrek really hasn't. NuTrek is very much like other sic fi franchises today especially Star Wars. I think NuTrek is starting to get lost in all the white noise because we have so much sci fi, fantasy and superhero films out there now. Nimoy took the role when there was a lot less of the types of movies that are popular today. Basically Nimoy and his Spock came around at the right time and that particular mixture made him and his character a lasting icon. Though as I said fans will still remember that Spock was one of Quintos roles and many especially trek fans will know him for that but I think the general population won't.

That could largely be a description of society versus the portrayal by either actor. Nimoy broke new ground in a time when science fiction was not as a large of a presence now.

I think Quinto could embody the character, if he chose to do so. He really has the opportunity to build on Nimoy did, much in the way that many Shakespeare actors do as well.

I think that there is more at work than a one to one ratio.

What new ground do you think was broken? The "half breed" and outsider characters aren't new with Trek. The story telling wasn't innovative either. Being an adult oriented, serious SF show was, though.

But it wasn't really. Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Thriller sometimes went into scifi/fantasy territory, and The Outer Limits definitely was.

I always thought that what made it stand out was that it was an American serialised 'adult' scifi. The UK were already on their third year of Doctor Who (which was aimed at kids, but had picked up a bit wider audience) and The Avengers, whilst The Prisoner would come out barely year later.

My two cents about the actual topic? If Quinto sticks around, maybe. Or at least his version will be able to stand on his own like without constant comparisons like Picard eventually did. The way the Internet has changed things of makes it hard to determine based on our own precedent. Maybe if the Internet was around in 1959, there'd be the consensus that Ramon Navarro was the definitive Ben-Hur. Who knows?

Its funny to this day people still compare Kirk to Picard. while Picard is known amongst fans he has never really became the iconic character that Kirk became.

True, I should have been more specific.

I heard Stewart say on Graham Norton that the average person on the street tended to identify him as a member of the TOS Crew. I think in particular that he had one woman try to tell her husband that he was meeting 'Captain Spock.'

Apparently Stewart's answer was just: "No."

Come to think of it, I'm fairly sure that one of the school friends I dragged along to 2009 thought Stewart was Captain Kirk. She asked why Pine wasn't bald.

Wow that's pretty bad. To confuse Kirk and Picard. I guess she wasn't a ST fan. LOL!

The one thing you can predict about the future and be 100% accurate, is that the future will be nothing like what is predicted.

I'm still waiting for my Mr. Fusion.

We're 15 years into the 21st century. WHERE ARE THE FLYING CARS?!

They are here but unfortunately they look a bit like airplanes with the dumb looking wings. Basically they are airplanes that can drive like a car when they land. Big deal I says.
