Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Manual?

I was interested in picking up the DS9 Technical Manual, but I balked at the extortion stickered on the book.

Nice. But if you knew the extent to which the editors bust their humps to keep the prices as low as possible, you'd rethink that characterization.

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

^^ Whatever the rationalization the end result is that I did not feel the book warranted its asking price. I simply meant to convey that I may not have been alone in that assessment and that that may be partly why the past books have not sold as well as Pocket had hoped. Another aspect may well be that not as many people are interested in this material as they once were coupled with the fact that much of such materiel is easily and freely available over the net.

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

I wasn't making a rationalization. I know book prices are high. I contend with that reality every day.

I was responding to your use of the word "extortion," which was clearly meant to be inflammatory.

Sorry, my faith died when "Starship Spotter" was published.

Well, I'd've hoped it wouldn't have that reaction...

'Course, I hope you realize that Starship Spotter isn't and wasn't ever intended as anybody's idea of a comprehensive tech manual, at least not anyone who was involved with the project. If you're basing your logic on that premise, then your conclusions will inevitably be flawed.

I for one would love to see (or even write!) a comprehensive ship book, but whether the mass audience would support a hard-tech book of the type, in today's market, is a much dicier thing than finding folks like me willing to work on the project.

As for Pocket's willingness to take risks, your estimation of it is uninformed.

Even a cursory glance at the projects over the past few years should disabuse anyone of the notion that Pocket is unwilling to take some risks.

OTOH, consider, too, the natural reluctance of the people who are investing the funds to put those funds into projects they have reason to believe will fail. Whe one test fails, it takes a lot of work to build up to a second. When two or more tests fail repeatedly, well, how many times being burned does one want these folks to be before saying they're shy isn't treated as at least understandable?

All that said, gods know I'd love to see more tech stuff. I thought Star Charts was fun, but I'd love to see a much more comprehensive star atlas. I thought the Spotter was neat (and not just 'cause I worked on it ;) ), but I'd love to see a thorough treatment of the subject of starships and stations in Trek. But if a good half-dozen tech and tech-related books have all failed, I can't say that I blame the folks making the decisions about how to invest their money.

And I agree. If there is a way that someone knows to increase the audience, tell the folks who make the books! :)

Best,
Alex

Im still waiting

Good for you. Patience is a virtue.

What a tease.

Me, I know better than to wait for that which will never come.

Insert obligatory Boston Red Sox and/or Chicago Cubs reference here.

Maybe to make everyone happy, Marco really should lie and say there's a book coming out in a few years. ;)

You know, after reading some of the retarded and very lame replies in this thread, I was jokingly thinking the same thing to myself. :D

That's for sure.

Let me see a show of hands: Who among you would've guessed, eight years ago, that any one would've bought novels featuring a couple of one-off characters and a slew of new characters? I know I probably wouldn't have done it. But Peter David's New Frontier novels have been relatively successful. The same could be said of the SCE e-books.

Pocket has no problem taking risks. Publishing all the previous Tech Manuals were fairly big risks. Risks that have not paid off lately.

Ouch! Harsh and uncalled for!

Yes, I'm a Cubs fan. What's it to you? :p

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

Hey, I like the Cubs, too.

That of course is merely your opinion.

Of no greater value than mine.

And my opinions, based on my observations is that Pockets ventures into the tech manual world since the DS9:Technical Manual have been "halfhearted" to say the least.

Dayton3, again you duck questions. You stated above that you knew how to market the tech books to a broader audience.

Since you post this SAME topic every few months, why don't you share your ideas.

Or was it just all talk?

Patience golakers patience.

You don't believe me. So I'm in no hurry to sate your curiousity. Nor to hear your biased criticism or the "we are professionals" platitudes of Pockets people.

That's just a roundabout way of saying that you've got nothing.

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

I feel like I'm in some sort of chronic hysteresis.

Believe what you want. It is your right.

But I'm not letting people stampede me into posting anything by constantly baiting me with "what ya got".

But believe what you wish.

Dayton3 -

You said you knew of ways to expand readership for tech manuals. You disparaged the folks at Pocket Books who are nice enough to respond to your often redundant threads in the first place. And you'll probably start the same thread again before the year is out.

You've got nothing. Yes, I believe that.
